Corvallis’ Warnken going solo

May 8, 2019 by Jean Schurman

Corvallis’ Caleb Warnken returns a shot against Hamilton’s Sam Toenjes on Saturday. This is Warnken’s first year as a singles player. Jean Schurman photo.

For the past two years, Caleb Warnken of Corvallis has been playing doubles and doing very well. Last year, he and his partner, Gabe DeLeo finished third in the state and although DeLeo graduated, Warnken was expected to pick up a new partner and continue on. But Warnken has taken a different path, that of a singles player.

Coach Chris Maul-Smith said Warnken possess the ability to make good decisions to pick and execute shots. “But if that shot doesn’t work, he just moves on to the next shot, he doesn’t dwell on the missed shot.”

Whether it’s because of his doubles play, or basketball or whatever, Warnken can see the entire court very well and plays accordingly according to Maul-Smith. “He makes things happen.”

On Saturday, Warnken defeated Hamilton’s No. 1 player, Sam Toenjes. Toenjes and Dillon’s Bradley Rakich are a couple of the toughest singles in the division. Rakich is the defending state champion. They will all meet in the divisional tournament in two weeks.
