Wrestling season begins

The wrestling season kicked off this weekend with the Hamilton and Corvallis teams making the trip to Polson and Florence traveling to Cascade. This year, Darby will be co-opting with Corvallis after dropping down to Class C.
Corvallis came out strongly and placed second behind Class AA powerhouse, Kalispell Glacier. The Blue Devils brought home four championships. Chase Connors came out of the Corvallis JV ranks to take first at 105 pounds with a major decision over Cody Decker of Ronan. Travis Davis, who took the state championship last year at 135 pounds, moved up a weight division this year and continued his winning ways. He defeated Alex Nystrom of Polson 22-6. Devan Williams won the 145-weight division with a 7-0 decision over Joey Hiett of Sentinel. Riley Nagel, who finished second in the state last year at 145 pounds, moved up to 160 pounds. He defeated Jacen Peterson of St. Ignatius, 14-2.
Hamilton finished with one champion. Forest Fortney won a major decision at 189 pounds with a major decision over Barret Sargen of St. Ignatius.
The Hamilton Invitational wrestling tournament will be this Saturday at Hamilton High School at 9 a.m.
Florence made the trip across the mountains to Cascade to compete against other Class B and C schools. Cascade won the tournament. Florence finished sixth. The Falcons had three champions. Tanner Lund defeated Cameron Hunt of Butte with a 4-1 decision. Kody Davidson won at 130 pounds with a pin of Eli Folda of Fairfield. Tanner Cobbs defeated Jake French of Choteau with an 8-4 decision.
