Stevensville – James N. Campbell passed away on April 12, 2017 at the age of 97. Jim was fortunate to be able to live at home until his death.
Born in Victor, Idaho to Nathanial and Eleanor Campbell, he attended schools in Victor and Boise, Idaho.
Jim enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served in the South Pacific until 1945. He was involved in several campaigns in WWII and left the Army as a 1st Sargent. He was later called up during the Korean Crisis.
While working for the Bureau of Reclamation at Anderson Ranch Dam in Idaho, he met and married Laura Combs, from Glasgow, Montana, on August 10, 1946. Over the years he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of the Air Force. Jim and Laura lived in many locations throughout the Northwest while raising five children. In 1974, he retired from Government service after 33 years to pursue his goal of ranching. Their first ranch was in Northern Idaho. Later, in 1985, Jim and Laura moved to a ranch in the Bitterroot Valley because he was told “the wind never blows in the Bitterroot.” Jim raised a variety of livestock over the years. Throughout his life he also enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting, especially with his family. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post in Stevensville.
He is survived by three daughters, Ann Campbell, Cathy Campbell and Karen Dozier of Stevensville, and two sons, Gary (Ritamarie) of Great Falls and Scott (Carol) of Seattle, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Laura, a son, his parents, three sisters, two brothers and a great grandson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 12 noon at the Whitesitt Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Charles Alkula officiating. Cremation has taken place and burial will be held at a later date. A reception will follow the service at the United Methodist Church in Stevensville. Tim Groves says
My name is Tim Groves and I have the honor and pleasure of working for Scott Campbell, Jim’s son, here at the Boeing Company. I never met Mr. James Campbell but if he is anything like his son he was a great man. The Campbell family are in our prayers. God bless!
