There is a lot of whining about how Hillary Clinton won the popular vote but Donald Trump won because of the Electoral College. The Electoral College was basically designed so that one populated segment of the country could not skew the votes in their favor at the expense of other parts of the country.
For instance, in this election Mrs. Clinton won the entire West Coast. Had she won, the political representation would be entirely different from that of the middle of the country or the South, leaving us to pander to the interests of the coast.
Google James Madison re the beginnings and changes the Electoral College has gone through to get to what we have today.

It was also put in place to compensate for the fact that the southern states were full of people who were not allowed to vote (slaves), but were still considered part of the population for electoral votes.
Alexander Hamilton sad the electoral college was meant to ensure “that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.” He was aware that someone might have “Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity,” that might allow them to win a significant number of votes despite a lack of qualifications. He also states that the electoral college should protect us from “the desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils.”
Donald Trump is a despicable human being whose candidacy was aided, in a significant way, by cyber attacks carried out by the Russian government. He has financial interests all over the world that he refuses to disclose. His financial dealings with foreign governments will put him in violation of Constitution the minute he is sworn in to office. He is exactly the type of person the founding fathers created the electoral college to protect us from.
