In the July 8 story on objections to the BNF Travel Plan, it was incorrectly reported that “They complained explicitly about the archery season and suggested that it be closed on the first of September instead of October 15.” As Co-chairman of Montana Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, Greg Munther knows this statement to be in error, as he wrote the objection and was at the objection meeting. Munther says the objection is actually about when motorized traffic on some trails should be closed. The group recommended some motorized trails penetrating elk security areas be closed September 1 to better protect elk security during the archery seasons. The proposed travel plan keeps these trails open to motorized traffic until October 15, which Montana BHA believes contributes to displacement of elk to private lands and reduces hunter opportunity even before general rifle season begins. Montana BHA has not suggested any changes to elk archery season.
