‘Red mud’ research

October 16, 2026 by Guest Post Leave a Comment

by Helen Sabin, Corvallis

U.S. Critical Materials (USCM) recently published a splashy announcement regarding a two-year research agreement with Columbia University. However, a closer look at the details raises significant questions for the residents of the Bitterroot Valley.

The fine print reveals that Columbia’s research focuses on extracting critical elements from “red mud,” an industrial waste byproduct of aluminum refining  that is a line of study already being pursued by other institutions and President Trump.

Laboratory research on industrial runoff in New York is a far cry from establishing a viable, commercial mining operation in Montana. (source: https://www.mining.com/us-critical-materials-greenmet-form-alliance-for-gallium-production/)

This raises an obvious question for USCM, District Ranger Dan Pliley, and the Bitterroot National Forest leadership: If USCM is serious about developing a legitimate mining project in Montana, why collaborate with an Ivy League university thousands of miles away instead of Montana Technological University?

Montana Tech is a world-class institution right down the road in Butte, complete with premier mining expertise and an active underground training mine on campus.

Is the Columbia name simply meant to sound more impressive on a press release?

A laboratory experiment does not magically transform into a real-world mine just because a press release uses buzzwords like “critical minerals” and “domestic supply chain”.

Impressive marketing claims are no substitute for verifiable facts.

The U.S. Forest Service has a responsibility to rigorously examine every plan submitted by USCM to distinguish actual operational substance from speculation.

The USFS should require independent evidence backing USCM’s claims, including proof of adequate financing to execute their proposals.

Most importantly, USCM’s promotional campaign demonstrates why the Forest Service must conduct a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) without delay.

If USCM intends to disturb the delicate headwaters of the Bitterroot River, the public deserves total transparency.

We need to know precisely what is being proposed, who is funding it, what has been independently verified, and what the true environmental consequences will be downstream.

Ranger Pliley and the Forest Service must hold USCM accountable and demand proof before allowing any operations to proceed.
