James “Jim” Thomas Lawless, 75, of Darby, passed away on July 6, 2026.
Jim was born in Missoula on May 29, 1951, to the late James “Bud” and Marge Lawless. He lived his entire life in Darby and was a true Bitterrooter. An avid lover of the outdoors, Jim was a dedicated fisherman and hunter from the young age of ten. In his youth, he had a legendary streak at local raffles and turkey shoots; one year, he won six or seven turkeys before Thanksgiving, earning himself the lifelong nickname “Turkey.”
Throughout his life, Jim worked various jobs, but later found his true passion in buying and selling. He had an unmatched eye for a good deal, always operating with absolute honesty and staying true to his word. Jim also had a great love for cooking and was exceptionally skilled at it.
Known for his generous spirit, Jim was always ready and willing to help anyone in need. He had a deep love for animals and was well-loved by people from all walks of life. With his passing, Darby has lost a true local historian, as Jim could share stories about almost anything regarding the history of the Bitterroot Valley.
Jim will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by his sister, Lynda, and her husband, Robert Moore, as well as many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
