A couple Letters to the Editor in the April 3 Bitterroot Star state that trapping of animals is not a constitutional right under Montana’s Constitution. This is wrong; it is a guaranteed right, under Article IX, Section 7: “the opportunity to harvest wild fish and wild game animals is a heritage that shall ever be preserved to the individual citizens of the state…” You can Google it to see what the Department of Fish and Wildlife says about it.
WMA says
Mary,
You are correct in your citation of the Montana constitution. Just checked my copy. Doesn’t mention trapping at all.
Mike Miller says
Thank you, Mary.
I tried multiple times to write a response similar to yours here, but was immediately censored by this paper every time, even after I called the paper about it. Even a response I wrote here to you was immediately censored.
