Kudos to Ravalli Electric Co-op

May 2, 2023 by Guest Post

by Carmela M. Bowns, Hamilton

Ravalli Electric Cooperative’s “Power of Change” program recently awarded Bitterroot Public Library $2500 for a collection of new Wonderbooks for young readers. Wonderbooks are the modern version of Read Along story books that young readers listen to and read at the same time. Wonderbooks are most appropriate for new readers ages 2 to 7 but are available to readers of all ages.

Bitterroot Public Library’s current read-along book option consists of offering young readers a bag with a book, along with an audio CD. The Power of Change grant allows the Library to offer read-along options with more current and child-friendly technology.

Wonderbooks have a built-in audio component, so the reader is able to listen to the book at their own pace, including being able to pause, rewind, fast forward, and reset. Books are rechargeable, with charges lasting up to 10 hours.

New readers tend to comprehend reading material better when they simultaneously read and listen to a book. The combination of visual and auditory input helps reinforce the material which is especially valuable for new readers.

Thanks to this grant, the Library is able to add about 50 different Wonderbooks to its collection. The new books should be available in July and may be checked out for a two- to four-week period.

Thanks, Ravalli Electric Cooperative’s “Power of Change,” for encouraging young Library patrons in their literacy journey! Your grant benefits the community’s young readers and the overall community.
