George Mobiot published an article in the Guardian on the 18th of November 2022 regarding the fossil fuel industry. He is a British award winning author specializing in environmental and political subjects.
He reported that in the last fifty years the fossil fuel industry has profited 2.8 billion dollars a day. And they pay a small fraction of that to “buy every politician and every political decision they want.”
In 1972 a United Nations conference falsely claimed to address the environmental crisis taking place. “A handful of powerful nations, including the UK and US, convened what their secret minutes called an ‘informal and confidential’ body at that summit, whose purpose, the notes show, was to ensure poorer countries did not get what they wanted, and that no international standards would be agreed onpollution or environmental quality.”
He reported in the first nine months of this year, the seven biggest private sector oil companies made around $150 billion in profits. Yet governments continue to supplement this windfall by granting oil and gas companies $64 billion a year in public subsidies!
And all of this is our fault. Our tax dollars are being sent to oil executives who are already making millions of dollars a year. We are voting for politicians who accept bribes from the oil companies. And we are voting for politicians who are causing life threatening and catastrophic damage to our planet.
You might ask, “Well, what can I do about it?” First, don’t vote for corrupt politicians who are taking “campaign contributions” from oil companies. Secondly, realize the EPA has approved an alternative fuel (higher mixed alcohol) about 20 years ago that is 95% cleaner than gasoline, yet no one is making it!
If we continue our own inaction and apathy in regards to the planet being destroyed and making the oil companies even richer, we deserve what we get. We are killing ourselves; it is poverty to the voters and masses while the riches go to the corrupt.
