by Mary E. Costello, Stevensville
It was with interest I read in the Bitterroot Star September 29 issue the article about bus drivers quitting, I noted the Stevensville superintendent was on the district negotiating committee with three board members. I would imagine the superintendent advised board members of what he thought would fit his budget and the drivers deserved.
It is my understanding he had a substantial increase in his salary. Was his salary increase part of the Covid relief funds the school received? Has he become friends of the board members on the negotiating committee? Were the teachers given raises or increases like the superintendent?
The superintendent does not show he values bus drivers or their level of responsibility as drivers. The bus drivers are responsible for keeping our children and grandchildren safe. They often have long hours and dangerous driving conditions. Not just anyone can be a safe, responsible bus driver. The superintendent may think bus drivers are at the bottom of the work force but they are in charge of our most valuable assets.
My vote is to give the bus drivers the raise that they requested. They are worth it and deserve to be adequately compensated.
