Listening to the many tributes to General Colin Powell who passed away last Monday, one short video of General Powell speaking about an incident he was involved in, moved me so much that I felt compelled to share his comments with our community. This is what he said: “I was on the side of the road with a flat tire. A gentleman stopped to help me. He had a sleeveless shirt and shorts on and I thought he would freeze to death. I noticed that he had one leg that had been blown off and I knew he was “one of my guys.” (i.e. a veteran). He really touched my soul and reminded me of what our country is all about and why it is so great, so let’s stop screaming at each other and just take care of each other.”
I must admit that I teared up a bit listening to General Powell’s comments and it is my sincere hope that as we engage in conversations, and yes, write “Letters to the Editor “, that some of us will give pause to think about the General’s comments and how appropriate they are in the divisive times we live in.
