I appreciated Col Sperry’s thoughtful letter of January 20, entitled “Let’s get out of the Weeds.” He addressed the issues of a Federal Government and an unelected Administrative State that is supplanting an inept Congress as the originator of “law,” without any concern for the US Constitution.
The bureaucracy and the Federal Government are subverting the Constitution, infringing on our freedoms as sovereign individuals, and recklessly endangering the well being of the country and its citizens.
I agree with the Colonel’s point that our public educational system, as well as many private institutions, is failing us by indoctrinating and propagandizing coming generations rather than teaching them how to think for themselves.
On the other hand, I no longer agree with his recommendation to support action at this time along the lines of a Constitutional Convention or a Convention of States, as is recommended in SJ2.
Profligate spending by the Congress and administrations of both stripes and egregious corruption of entrenched politicians divorced from reality and the people they are supposed to serve are real threats to the survival of the nation. However, a strategy based upon a Constitutional Convention or a Convention of States is opposed by many today, as well as in words of caution from prominent figures throughout our history.
To successfully restore a limited government and preserve liberty warrants a thoughtful strategy and plan. They must identify the organizational structure and people with the experience, conviction, dedication, perseverance and resources to take on anti-American leftists/globalists, as well as the actions to restore a government “by, for and of the people.”
Given the reservations expressed by people opposed to SJ2, the onerous exemplar draft of a Constitution for the “New States of America” (http://www.sweetliberty.org/issues/concon/newstates.htm#.VCg4BxZeepo) that is attributed to leftists and globalists and reads like it came out of “Hunger Games,” and recent reversals by supposedly conservative new members of Congress who are now supporting the Biden Administration, I am of the mind that a rush into a Constitutional Convention is ill advised. A lot more discussion, debate, planning and recruitment to assess and implement alternative strategies and plans are essential to rein in the egregious federal government.
The Montana State Senate should reject the current Resolution SJ2. A convention of some sort may or may not be part of a future plan and legislative support can be considered at a later date.
To move forward, those who abhor the idea of a convention must bring forth constructive, viable alternatives for saving this nation so they can be weighed against a convention of some sort. We should not summarily dismiss Col Sperry’s recommendation or the concerns of the opponents to that approach. Nor can we sit back and do nothing.
Doing nothing is a decision and likely a wrong one, for we are already on a path to lose the Constitution and our freedoms under the Harris/Biden Administration. It will be difficult, but we must find a way to turn the nation away from the socialist path the current Administration and Congress are pursuing.
For nearly two and one half centuries, “we the people” have loved, protected and benefited from the freedoms protected by that Constitution and the government of limited and enumerated powers it created. Despite its flaws, the United States has been a model for the entire world and has provided more freedom, prosperity and security for more people than any government or nation in the history of mankind. We cannot simply stand by and allow the ideas and blessings of freedom to die.
