The Stevensville Yellowjackets boys and girls soccer teams swept Bigfork with the boys winning 6-1 and the girls winning, 2-0. Stevensville’s Carlos Morales hit the back of the net twice and Bigfork scored twice for Stevensville. Jon Post also scored for the Yellowjackets in the 6-1 win.
This is the second win for the Yellowjackets. They defeated Polson last week. Coach Ralph Serrette, who is beginning his 29th year coaching at Stevensville, said this was a good start to their season.
“They are very verbal and very supportive of each other,” he said. “That is key.”
The Stevensville boys are very verbal this year, always talking to each other and telling one another what is happening on the field. Serrette went on to say that the team is truly a team and that there is no one individual who is more dominant than the others. “It’s a whole team effort when they are trying to score and that is key in soccer.”
Between this game against Bigfork and the one last week against Polson, the Stevensville defense has only allowed two goals and one of those was an own goal.
Serrette went on to say there are a good number of sophomores on the team, along with three seniors and five juniors. He said with the score lopsided, he was able to sub younger players in Thursday’s game so it was more more like a junior varsity game with the young players getting game experience.
The Stevensville girls topped Bigfork, 2-0. Stevensville pressed the Bigfork girls most of the first half and kept the visiting team out of scoring range. Stevensville scored on a penalty kick in the first half and then again in the second half to win.
Coach Nick Giese said his team played exactly how he wanted them to play. “We are trying a new formation this year. They doubted me. I think they’re not doubting me any more with two wins now.”
He went on to say they won at Polson last week. “We got by a little bit. It was a little shaky but we worked out the kinks yesterday and today they performed very well.”
He was very pleased with his back three defenders: Victoria Skalsky, Cassidy Alber, and Ashton Lewis. Although the team has finished in the top three the last couple of years, Giese feels his team may compete for the top spot this year. “We’re shooting for number one.”
