Highway fatality markers

May 8, 2019 by Guest Post

By Donald Helmbrecht, Corvallis American Legion Post #91

The markers that stand beside the road in the location of a fatality are placed and maintained by The American Legion as a reminder to motorists that driving can be dangerous. People need to be aware of

this and drive without distractions, cautiously and maintaining a safe speed. The marker is in itself a safety reminder and not in any way meant to be a family or personal memorial to be decorated and or obscured from view.

Each Post in Montana is responsible for putting up and maintaining them in their area. Corvallis Post #91 American Legion is responsible for the markers along the Eastside Highway from Marcus, North to Bell Crossing and along Highway 93 at Bell Crossing South to the Veterans bridge in Hamilton. Many of these are in disrepair and over the course of the next few months will be refurbished. If you notice that they are missing please know that they are being repaired and painted and then replaced. They will be done a few at a time with completion by this fall.

These are the property of The American Legion, so please do not decorate, write on, or place names on the face of the marker or post.

The Montana Department of Transportation set the policy and the rules for the program and The American Legion follows these as the only agency responsible for the markers. This means that each American Legion Post is responsible for enforcing the rules governing the program in their area.
