Eight years ago, the coaching staff at Corvallis decided that a twilight meet would be a great way to showcase the track program at Corvallis and set about figuring how best to work in all the track events into about five hour time frame and conclude with the javelin through under the lights on the football field. Sometimes the weather has cooperated but not always. Last Thursday night, Mother Nature fully cooperated with a beautiful spring evening while four teams competed. Corvallis coach Spencer Huls said he wants to keep the number of teams at five in order to make the event fit into the time frame. However this time there were only four teams as Charlo pulled out because of the holiday weekend.
Corvallis won both the boys and girls team scoring but Columbia Falls, Hamilton and Polson all had a good showing. Five meet records were broken. Polson’s Bea Frissell clocked 5:16.45 to break Ayden Eickoff’s record of 5:21.30 set in 2013. Eickoff was from Corvallis. Hamilton’s Brynnli Poulson ran the 3,200 in 11:39.81, breaking Isabella Pape’s record of 11:43.80 set in 2014.Poulson is ranked right behind Frissell in the state in the 3,200. Angelica Street of Columbia Falls threw the javelin 138-09 to break Mariah Corrigan of Polson’s record of 133-05 set in 2016.
In the boys, Columbia Falls’ Drew Morgan ran the 400 in 51.94 to break Matthew Rensvold’s time of 52.37 in 2016. Corvallis’ own Garrett Brown blasted the shot put 55 feet to break Riley Sampson’s record of 53-06. Sampson was from Polson.
Brown’s throw of 55 feet is the second farthest in the state, only 11.5 inches behind Carter Hughes of Sidney, another Class A opponent. Hughes also leads the discus in the state with a throw of 166-09 but Hamilton’s Jacob Campbell threw 154-06 in the Twilight Meet to take first and be ranked fifth in the state right now. Michael Graves of Hamilton stepped up his throwing in the javelin and marked 189-02, with is second only to Sentinels’ Rylan Ortt in the state. (Ortt is ranked in the top five in the nation in this event.)
Hamilton’s Katelynn Dickemore won the shot put with a throw of 37-03.5. This puts her in third in the state behind Anna Zimmer and Kylie Zimmer, both of Lewistown. Dickemore’s second place throw in the discus of 124-06 is also second in the state. Corvallis’ Calla Haldorson has to top mark in the state with a throw of 142-08. She won the Twilight meet with a throw of 136-02. Corvallis’ Lainie Albright finished third in the javelin at the Twilight Meet with a throw of 113-04. However her throw is the fifth best in the state currently.
