Nothing ‘great’ about racism

August 23, 2017 by Guest Post

Donald Trump is a racist. After Tuesday there’s no doubt about it. As he ranted to the nation a white sheet was hanging out his pants leg. His performance at the press conference gave support to the Klan, white nationalists, neo Nazis and their despicable creed of hatred and race superiority. He is the enabler- in- chief of their noxious beliefs.

Before Tuesday Trump dog whistled to the Klan and Nazis giving a fig leaf to those who wanted to believe he didn’t mean it. But he’s played footsie with the white supremacist crowd for years. That he wasn’t called out for it is merely disgraceful. But on Tuesday what he did was dangerous. Using the bully pulpit of the Presidency, he made it clear that he endorses their hateful ideas of racial superiority, supports their violent behavior and shares their hideous aims.

We now know for certain he supports their poisonous creed which is spreading rapidly into the body politic due to his support.  No longer can our elected representatives simply denounce this shameful movement. They must call down and call out the President for supporting its hateful and destructive doctrines. We citizens must do the same.

Europe was created by history, but America by philosophy. At the heart of that philosophy, stated in our founding documents, is the ideal that we are all created equal. It took a terrible civil war, hard won legislation and will take our continuing commitment to keep and fulfill that ideal that “all” means “all”. We, our elected representatives and citizens, must speak out now. We must tell this President his support of racist hatemongers and their disgusting creed is intolerable and un-American.

We must not let him, or them, destroy our ideal of equality for all, the true mark of American greatness.
