Hamilton, Montana (July 6, 2017) – Fire danger on the Bitterroot National Forest has been raised to “High” this morning.
Hotter and drier weather is predicted with the possibility of thunderstorms beginning Friday through the weekend. When fire danger is “high” fires will start from most causes. The fires will spread rapidly and quickly increase in intensity after ignition. Small fires quickly become large fires and exhibit extreme fire behavior, such as long-distance spotting and fire whirls. These fires are difficult to control and often become longer-lasting fires.
On Monday night an unattended campground campfire escaped the fire ring. As a reminder remember to completely extinguish campfires before leaving your site. It is illegal to have unattended campfires. As of today there have been 11 fires on the Bitterroot National Forest (6 human and 5 lightning caused).
