George F. Jobe, 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at his residence in Hamilton.
George was born November 10, 1927 in Wibaux, Montana, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Jobe. He lived in Wibaux until 1939 when he moved to the Bitterroot Valley with his family. He graduated from Victor High School.
George was drafted into the Army during the Korean War conflict in 1950 and served as a Corporal in the 2nd Armored Division, in the Artillery “Hell on Wheels”. When his service ended, he returned to the Bitterroot and married Reeta M. Thompson on May 12, 1956. They moved to Missoula shortly after their marriage and it was there that their daughter Sheila was born.
George initially worked with his brother-in-law, Henry Pfau, running a gas station in Missoula on his return from the service. He later worked driving Olympia beer trucks and then moved on to a career in road construction. He also worked at the mine in Kellogg, Idaho for a number of years.
George thoroughly enjoyed family and friends. He was from a large family that gathered constantly at the family home in Corvallis and later in Hamilton. The late night pinochle games and cigar smoking was legendary. He enjoyed the social life and made many good friends over the years. Although he could be a little rough and tough – and occasionally grouchy – he was well liked by his many friends and family.
He moved to Hamilton when he retired. He did a little farming and planted a big garden every year. His daughter and granddaughters would come over in the fall to help with the harvest.
He was preceded in death by his wife Reeta in 1989; parents Frank and Elizabeth; brothers Dominic, Jake, Joseph, Vincent and Henry (Hank); sisters Julia, Peggy, Marian, Rosella, Johanna, Pauline and Elizabeth (Lizzie).
He is survived by his daughter Sheila (Kevin) Cuba and granddaughters Rachael and Sarah; sisters Florentina (Augie) Costanzo of Spokane, WA, Frances McLean of Milwaukie, OR, Isabella Moerkerke of Hamilton, sisters-in-law Dovianne Jobe and Leona Jobe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In accordance with George’s wishes, his remains have been cremated and no services are planned at this time.
