Historic barn lecture
The North Valley Public Library hosts Montana Conversation, “Hand-Raised: The Historic Barns of Montana” with Chere Jiusto on Thursday, June 15 at 6 p.m. in the Library Community Room. The Friends of the Library are sponsoring this program. The rest of the funding for the Montana Conversations program is provided by Humanities Montana through grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Montana’s Cultural Trust, and private donations. The historic barns of Montana are a threatened part of our heritage. To capture their history and encourage their preservation, Chere Jiusto, Christine Brown and photographer Tom Ferris collaborated on the award-winning book “Hand Raised: Historic Barns of Montana,” released by Montana Historical Society Press in 2011. Montana Preservation Alliance (MPA) championed this decade-long project, which traces the agricultural history of Big Sky Country and celebrates the craftsmanship that went into building these icons of rural life. This conversation includes an overview of Montana’s barn-building history, stunning photographs of barns from across the state, and the stories attached to some of Montana’s most memorable, photogenic, and historic barns. Back Country Horsemen
Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen will hold its their monthly meeting on Thursday, June 15 at the Coyote Coulee Trailhead. Potluck dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. and the general meeting starts at 7 p.m. Bring your own chair and beverage since this will be an outdoor meeting. Program speaker and member Dan Maiyo will discuss the proposed 88,000-acre Scotchman Peaks Wilderness area straddling the Idaho/Montana border and the recently designated Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness Area located due east of Stanley, Idaho, that is associated with the Salmon River and headwaters of the East Fork of the Salmon River. He will provide maps of both areas and offer copies of “Idaho Wilderness Considered”, an anthology of essays and photos by 25 noted Idahoans associated with the 1964 Wilderness Act and/or passage of new wilderness areas in 2015. History presentation
“Time Travels through the American West” will be performed by the producers/performers of “Romancing the West” on Thursday, June 15 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Daly Mansion.
“Time Travels through the American West” features singer/songwriter Christina Lynn Martin and cowboy poet Butch Martin performing highlights of the critically acclaimed documentary concert “Romancing the West” which tours throughout the U.S. History style documentary meets live concert performance in this unique and epic time traveling experience. “Romancing the West” has toured Western states in many historically significant theaters and venues from Gene Autry Museum’s Wells Fargo Theater in Los Angeles, Historic San Juan Capistrano, to Piper’s Opera House in Nevada, and Portland, Oregon. This year’s tour marks the show’s first performances in Montana in June and more shows along the California and Oregon Trails, giving the show’s producers a chance to present highlights they perform in the show, in the more intimate performance “Time Travels through the American West” in museums, historic sites and educational centers. This special presentation of the show will take the audience from the 1700’s through the Civil War, the turn of the century to the Golden Age of Hollywood, the post war era and the turbulent 1960’s and also include new features this year including tribute to veterans “Written on the Wall” and Martin Gerschwitz’s new video, “Remember Their Music” honoring music legends who are no longer with us. The show brings to life in music rare film, historic photos and video, memorable original music taking the audience through decades of social and political change, exploring both the tragic and the triumphant episodes of history to celebrate the pioneering human spirit and diverse legacy of the American West. Public Information Meeting on Refugees
The Bitterroot Human Rights Alliance and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is sponsoring a public information meeting about refugees on Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Senior Center, 820 N. 4th.
Are you interested in learning more about refugees and refugee resettlement in Montana? Whether this excites you or causes concern, come to this informational presentation and following Q&A. Mary Poole, Director of Soft Landing Missoula, will be the guest speaker. Remembering that most of our families were once immigrants too, BHRA and St. Paul’s members want the valley to be a welcoming place for refugees to experience what America is like. This also means extending an open hand to our neighbors with concerns to provide information and open dialogue. All are welcome to this special event.

Senior Center art show
The Stevensville Senior Center, 100 Mission, will have a fundraiser Art Show hosted by local artist Grace Wilson on Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Western Heritage Days. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Senior Center.
North Valley Pachyderm Club
The North Valley Pachyderm Club will meet Friday, June 16 at 12 noon at The Frontier Café, Hwy 93 in Stevensville. Guest speakers will be Dr. Kate Vandemoer, Terry Backs and Christopher Chavasse who will be talking about the CSKT Water Compact and lawsuit. The North Valley Pachyderm Club is an educational arm of the Republican Party. All are welcome.
Birding-by-Ear Workshop
Many of us cannot identify a bird that we hear but don’t see. To help, Bitterroot Audubon Society is offering a Birding-by-Ear Workshop, consisting of an evening class and one of three morning field trips. The evening workshop will take place on Friday, June 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge’s Visitor Center, 4567 Wildfowl Lane, Stevensville. Two field trips, one led by Sherry Ritter and one by Deb Goslin, will take place on Saturday, June 17, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. in the Stevensville area. An additional field trip will be offered by Sherry, on Monday, June 19 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. in the Hamilton area.
Birders of all skill levels are welcome at the evening workshop, but the field trips are best suited for those who can identify common birds of the area, such as red-winged blackbirds, common ravens, northern flickers, black-capped chickadees, nuthatches, tree swallows, and downy woodpeckers.
While there is no limit to the number who can attend the evening workshop, the field trips are limited to 8 participants each, so register early! First-time homebuyers class
The Bitter Root Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc. (Bitter Root RC&D) will sponsor a first-time home-buyers class on Saturday, June 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors building at the corner of 4th and Cherry streets in Hamilton.
The Bitter Root RC&D provides the only HUD-approved first-time home-buyers’ pre-purchase classes in Ravalli County. The cost for the in-person class is $50 and includes the one-on-one financial counseling session required prior to taking the group class.
Attendees must attend the entire session on Saturday (8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and participate in a one-on-one intake and financial counseling session to qualify for the certificate. This fulfills the education requirement of government insured or funded loans.
Participants must be fully registered by Thursday, June 8, at 3 p.m. This includes payment in full and return of all completed paperwork. All counseling sessions must be completed by Monday, June 12. The one-on-one may be completed with a phone appointment and is included in the cost of the pre-purchase class. Payment in full is required to confirm space. If potential attendees are financially challenged, partial scholarships are available for those who qualify. This program is designed to help prospective homeowners navigate the home-buying process. Included will be discussions on mortgage readiness, credit, budgets, getting a mortgage, new loan products and/or changes to current government insured or funded loan products, and getting the house you want.
Methodist rummage sale
A Garage/Yard Sale will be held Saturday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stevensville United Methodist Church, 216 College Street. (Turn east at the four-way stop in Stevensville and go two blocks to the church.) The sale will benefit the Youth Programs of the United Methodist Church.

Sons of Norway/Tired Iron picnic
Bitterrootdalen Lodge and the Tired Iron Antique Tractor club will celebrate the longest day of the year on Wednesday, June 21 at 6 p.m. at Summerdale Park, 2.5 miles up Quast Lane, northeast of Corvallis. The Lodge will provide Shish-kabobs made from their famous Viking sausages, and have grill space for anyone bringing their own meat. The Lodge will provide paper cups and drinks, members and visitors should bring their own table service and a side dish to share. Sons of Norway wants to recognize the hard work of farmers and the general public is also invited. There will be children’s activities, time to visit and time for short business meetings, with the evening capped off when Bill Bradt lights off his “Norwegian Candle”. Summer Solstice at Redsun Labyrinth
Summer Solstice will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 21 at Redsun Labyrinth with the traditional luminaria display. Beginning at dusk, the Labyrinth will be illuminated to allow visitors the pleasure of enjoying the longest day of the year while walking and meditating in a mountain meadow setting. Music and a bonfire will entice you to linger. The luminarias are weather dependent, so in the event of rain, they will not be displayed.
