Shawn Chaffin, who graduated from Florence/Carlton High School in 1991, has been selected as the new women’s head basketball coach at San Diego Christian College in San Diego. Chaffin has been the Minot State University assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator since 2011. Prior to that he was an assistant women’s coach at Montana State Northern, the head coach of the women’s’ basketball team at the University of Great Falls, and an assistant at University of Montana Western from 2000-2006. During this time, Chaffin helped lead teams to three Frontier Conference regular season championships, five Frontier Conference tournament championships, six NAIA national tournament appearances, four Sweet Sixteen NAIA national tournament appearances and one Elite Eight NAIA appearance.
He was an assistant girls basketball coach at Florence under Sam Baerlocher and Kristi Schlimgen. During that time, the Lady Falcons made four appearances at the state tournament and brought home one state championship. He was also the president of the board of directors of the Bitterroot Bucs American Legion baseball team during that time. Chaffin graduated from UM Western with a degree in education in 2004. He is the son of Bob and Dolly Chaffin of Florence.
