If it’s raining, snowing, and the sun is shining all in the matter of a few minutes, it must be track season in Montana. The season began on Thursday with the Jim Johnson Track Meet in Frenchtown where the smaller schools participated. On Saturday, the Gene Hughes Track Meet was held at Corvallis with 14 teams participating.
At the Jim Johnson Track meet at Frenchtown, Darby finished fifth in the boys behind Frenchtown, Thompson Falls, Deer Lodge and Ronan. Victor was 11th in the 15 team meet. In the girls, Drummond won the meet. Darby finished eighth.
A showdown in the hurdles is already developing between Darby’s Kye McCollaum and Victor’s Jack Powell. McCollaum was first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.90. Powell was second with 16.11. On Saturday, at the Gene Hughes Meet in Corvallis, Powell finished second in the 110 hurdles and McCollaum was third by three tenths of a second.
McCollaum won the 300 hurdles at the Jim Johnson meet with a time of 42.53. He finished second on Saturday at Corvallis. John Beckers of Darby won the javelin with a toss of 181-3. Darby’s Evan Duggan finished was third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:57.73. Fran Dean of Frenchtown won with a time of 4:46.71. Duggan finished second in the 3,200 behind Jaiden Rowe of Frenchtown who had a time of 10:49.61. Duggan’s time was 11:19.02. Victor took fourth in the 400 relay.
Gracie Lang of Darby won the 3,200 with a time of 13:02.6. She took second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:54.69. Natalie Yocum of Arlee won with 5:52.31. Lang also won the 3,200 at the Corvallis meet with a time of 12:31.37.
State qualifying standards have been set for the year and so if an athlete hits one of these benchmarks, they are automatically qualified for the state meet. The standards are different for each class. Several athletes at Corvallis hit the standards and now can relax and enjoy the season, and continue to improve.
For the girls, Hamilton’s Kacia Guisinger won the high jump with a leap of 5’2”. The state qualifying mark for Class A is 5 feet so she has qualified. Also qualifying were Hannah Hutchison of Corvallis with a leap of 5 feet and Florence’s Autumn Round who also cleared 5 feet. (The qualifying for Class B is 4’10”.) Reilly Rostad of Hamilton marked a 17’1” in the long jump. The qualifying mark is 15’10”.
Teammates Calla Haldorson and Brookelyn Palin set the distance in the state in the javelin. Haldorson had a throw of 128’ for the win at Corvallis. Palin was right behind with a throw of 127’2”. Hamilton’s Kailan Rocheleau threw a 111’9” to take fifth and also qualify for state. The Class A qualifying mark is 108 feet. Victor’s Payton Tillotson finished sixth with a throw of 110’11” which also was a Class C qualifying mark and the top throw for Class C according to montanatrack.com.
Florence’s Caden Venters threw the javelin 185’5”, over 20 feet farther than the qualifying mark of 165 feet, to take first at the Gene Hughes Meet. Darby’s John Becker was second with a throw of 179’8”. The Class C qualifying mark for the javelin is 163’4”. Hamilton’s Jaylen Taggart won the discus with a toss of 143’6” which also was farther than the qualifying mark of 142 feet.
