Most Montanans are not fiscally wealthy. We are wealthy in other ways, including accessibility to amazing outdoor recreation, friendly communities, a great public education system and a strong ranching tradition, to name a few. These are things that make us wealthy in Montana.
We also have a history of millionaires trying to influence Montana. In 1899 the Copper King William Clark found himself in a scandal over bribery with United States Senators. In more recent years we have attempted to stay off wealthy groups like Western Tradition Partnership, as they try to influence Montana’s way of life and political system.
No doubt about it, campaign finance is a dirty business and this unfortunately seems to be continuing. Senator Steve Daines has received thousands of dollars from Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos and her family. Steve Daines’ plan to endorse Betsy DeVos flagrantly disregards his constituents who have come out in droves to ask him to vote NO on her confirmation, due to her lack of understanding of the office and the issues facing public education.
Where do Steve Daines’ priorities lie, with wealthy donors or with the people of Montana?
