Zen Buddhism Class
A class on Zen Buddhism will take place on Wednesday, October 12. Over the past year, participants have studied the basic sutras of the Buddha as translated by Thich Nhat Hanh, and now they will listen to talks by various Buddhist teachers, starting with Anam Thubten, author of “No Self, No Problem” and “The Magic of Awareness”, who came to the US from Tibet and who speaks very good English. They listen, discuss, and then sit in meditation for a time. The class meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. led by Jill Davies (642-3601). Donations taken. Book club
The Bitterroot Cares for Kids Network, in its ongoing work to address Adverse Childhood Experiences, is hosting a Book Club. Starting on Wednesday, October 12th and featuring guest host Kris Bayer, the BCKN will be exploring the book, “The Nurture Effect” by Anthony Biglan, PhD. The group will meet from 12 noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday through November 16 at 209 N. 10th in Hamilton. Learn, meet and thrive! York Rite Masons
The Commandery of the York Rite Masons will meet on Wednesday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Masonic Hall, 115 S. 3rd Street, Hamilton. The meeting will open with the installation of the coming year’s Commandery officers followed by a regular Commandery meeting led by the newly installed officers. Should a quorum not be present (one was not present at the last meeting), there will be a Council meeting. Members should bring both their Commandery Tactics Book and Council Ritual Book. The ladies will serve supper at 6:30 in the upstairs lounge to which all spouses and friends are invited. A small donation would be appreciated.

Women’s Newcomers’ Club
Are you new to the Bitterroot Valley? Have you been here for awhile and would just like to meet new people? If so, the Bitterroot Women’s Newcomers Club welcomes you to the next meeting, Thursday, October 13. Normally the group meets on the second Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the First Christian Church, 328 Fairgrounds Road in Hamilton. However, this month they will meet at the Montana Cider Works in Darby on Rye Creek Road at 10:45 a.m. for a tasting tour (tasting is $2). The Bitterroot Breastfeeding Coalition offers a free breastfeeding support group on the second Thursday of the month for the rest of 2016: October 13, November 10, December 8. Health Education Series
Learn how you can become a more active partner in your health care by attending the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital Healthcare Education Series. The classes are held at 5:30 p.m. at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Blodgett and Canyon View conference rooms. This new seven class series covers many aspects of your health, the first being “Blood Press Matters.” On Thursday, October 13, Dr. Eugenie Haight, an Internal Medicine Physician at Bitterroot Physicians Clinic, will be covering this important topic that impacts all ages. Hamilton Ionic Lodge
Ionic Lodge #38 will hold the monthly Stated Communications Meeting at the Lodge in Hamilton, 115 S. 3rd Street. on Thursday, October 13 for the discussion of business that regularly comes before the Lodge. The Stated Communications will be opened on the Master Mason’s Degree, Entered Apprentice Degree or Fellow Craft Degree if a Brother(s) of these Degrees are present. Selway-Pintler Wilderness Back Country Horsemen
You’re invited to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Selway-Pintler Wilderness Back Country Horsemen on Thursday, October 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hamilton Forest Service Building. There will be cake and refreshments along with lots of “trail talk” and guests are always welcome. The SPWBCH, an active, work oriented BCH chapter, is looking for members who really want to ride, pack, and clear trails! Even if you don’t own a horse, see what BCH is all about and help keep our trails open! The best of the back country always comes in the beauty of the fall colors. Women’s retreat
A gathering for singing, dancing, sharing stories and inquiry, “Shopping in Love’s Market” is a residential women’s retreat that takes place October 14-16 in Corvallis, Sponsored by the Dances of Universal Peace, local women have come together 11 times through the years to laugh, eat fabulous food, share their sorrows, and have a clothes swap, with the goal of returning home renewed and feeling each other’s deep support. First-time homebuyer class
The Bitter Root RC&D will hold its next class for first-time homebuyers on Saturday, October 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors building, 4th and Cherry in Hamilton. The cost for the in-person class is $50 and includes the one-on-one financial counseling session required prior to taking the group class. Attendees must attend entire session and participate in a one-on-one financial counseling session to qualify for the certificate. Participants must be fully registered by Thursday, October 6 at 3 p.m. Call 363-5450 to reserve your space today and schedule the one-on-one. The one-on-one may be completed with a phone appointment and is included in the cost of the pre-purchase class. Payment in full is required to confirm space. If potential attendees are financially challenged, partial scholarships are available for those who qualify. The office is located at 1709 North 1st Street in the building adjacent to Mildenberger Motors.
There is only one more scheduled class in 2016 and that will be Saturday, November 12, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., also at the Board of Realtors offices. Of particular importance for October is a review of the new regulations for the Rural Guarantee and Rural Direct loans.

Museum Zombie Apocalypse
Will you survive the infestation? Zombie Apocalypse takes place on Saturday, October 15 at the Ravalli County Museum, 205 Bedford, Hamilton. This year you have the option to play as a survivor or as a zombie! After you survive the Zombie Apocalypse celebrate with a laser light show and Dance on the front lawn of the museum. This event includes a bouncy obstacle course, kids activities, food vendors, a photo booth, 50/50 raffle to benefit the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department, and more. Peace Party
The 30th Anniversary Peace Party will be held Sunday, October 16 at 3 p.m. in the Home Arts Building at Missoula County Fairgrounds. The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center invites the community to help celebrate the 30th anniversary Peace Party gathering. The theme captures the group’s history of “Shining a Spotlight on Peace.” Wear your favorite peace attire. Homestead Organics will offer a gourmet meal with help from local growers and businesses. Beer and wine is free this year in a special commemorative glass. The Montana Women’s Chorus, Missoula Chapter will provide entertainment. There will be a silent auction and some great “Celebrate 30” raffle prizes.

Stevensville Playhouse auditions
Stevensville Playhouse will be holding auditions for “Christmas Belles” on Monday, October 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. The play is a hilarious comedy about three sisters trying to put on the greatest Christmas pageant ever staged and, of course, everything goes terribly wrong. There are parts for six women, three men and one teenage boy and the production will be directed by Gretchen Spiess and Dawn Shinn. Production dates are December 2-4, 8-10 and 15-17. Amateur Radio Club
The Bitterroot Amateur Radio Club (BARC) meets Monday, October 17 at 7 p.m. at BJ’s Restaurant in Hamilton. Members begin dining at 6 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and visitors are encouraged. Many people who are interested in getting into Ham/Amateur radio begin by visiting or joining the club. People of all ages are encouraged to participate and there will be subject matter experts on-hand to help you get started. Bitterroot Audubon
Bitterroot Audubon’s October meeting will feature a presentation on the fascinating but little-known Black Swift by Amy Seaman of Montana Audubon. The Black Swift is the largest swift in North America. They are hard to study since they fly high in the sky to feed on aerial insects and often nest behind remote waterfalls. Amy will discuss the Black Swift’s ecology, distribution, unique nesting behavior and status in Montana. She has led a Montana Audubon study on Black Swifts for three years in Glacier NP. Join Bitterroot Audubon to learn about this intriguing bird Monday, October 17 at 7 p.m. at the Bitterroot National Forest Headquarters on Hwy 93 on the north edge of Hamilton.
