Cattle antibiotic meeting
Montana State University Extension beef cattle specialists will host summer meetings across Montana to help livestock producers understand a new ruling by the United States Food and Drug Administration concerning feed-grade antibiotics.
The veterinary feed directive, or VFD, was developed by the USFDA and will impact how producers feed their livestock. The VFD impacts feed-grade antibiotics that are medically important, which are antibiotics used in both human and animal medicine. The VFD rule will be implemented on Jan. 1, 2017.
In preparation for the rule, MSU Extension Beef Cattle Specialists Megan Van Emon and Rachel Endecott and Montana Veterinary Medical Association President-Elect Katie Rein will present a series of meetings throughout Montana. The meetings will focus on the VFD basics, label changes, veterinary-client-patient-relationships, required information on a VFD form, impacts on minor species and other information. The goal of the meetings is to provide information that will help attendees aid in the ease of implementation of the VFD rule.
Meeting attendees will be given information in a binder, courtesy of the Western Extension Risk Management Education Center. A meeting will be held in Missoula on Thursday, August 25 from 1 to 5 p.m. Call Campbell Barrett at 258-4200 for more information.

Smart Driver class
An AARP Smart Driver Class (Driver Safety) will be presented on Friday, August 26 at 9 a.m. at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital, 1200 Westwood Drive in Hamilton. While this approximately four-hour safe driving strategies class is designed for drivers age 50 and over, all drivers are welcome. The class fee is $15.00 for AARP members and $20.00 for non-members. There are no written exams or driving tests. Montana mandates an insurance discount for qualified graduates. Pre-registration is advised. Goat presentation
The North Valley Public Library invites you to attend a presentation about goats on Friday, August 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. Before you buy them at the fair, learn what is involved with their care and upkeep. Jim and Stacy Coulter run a “Goat Rescue.” They know all about what it takes to care for these animals. If you love animals, if you love goats, this class is for you. Wolf Trapper Certification Class
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will host a wolf trapper certification class in Missoula on Saturday, August 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the FWP Region 2 office (3201 Spurgin Road). Certification is mandatory for anyone planning to trap wolves in Montana, and trappers who successfully completed a wolf trapping course in Montana or Idaho do not need to retake the course. Classes are free, and interested students can check the schedule and register online at fwp.mt.gov. Follow the links to “hunter education.” Classes will also be held in Bozeman (Aug. 13) and in Kalispell (Dec.10). In addition to specifics on equipment and techniques, participants will learn about the history, ethics, management and regulations related to wolves and wolf trapping.
Florence golf tournament
The Florence Civic Club will sponsor its annual golf tournament on Saturday, August 27 at 1 p.m. 100% of the funds raised will be used for the group’s Scholarship Program. 2016’s recipient of $1,000 is Danika Greer. Tournament fee is $50 per player, $190 for a 4-person team. Players receive a free Florence Civic Club visor, a free beer token and BBQ from Caffe Firenze. Trekker Kids
Montana State Parks will host the Clark Fork Coalition at Travelers’ Rest State Park, 6717 Hwy 12 W, Lolo, on Saturday, August 27 at 11 a.m. Come discover all about Montana’s waters and what we can do to keep the environment clean and healthy. This program is part of the Trekker Kids series and is open to kids 5-10 years old. Trekker Kids is a series of activities and programs for children and families that celebrate the outdoors of western Montana and the rich history of the Travelers’ Rest site.
