Two things happened last week in the Bitterroot Valley that unfortunately should never happen. First, the annual appearance of the fireworks shanties in almost every parking lot along Route 93 and second, our first wild fire of the season just west of Lost Horse Observation Point. While the fire, in this case, was probably caused by lightning, it does beg the question of why, in an area so prone to fires at this time of the year, do we continue to allow (even encourage) fireworks to be sold or used during the fire season? Is there something written into the Constitution somewhere that allows us the right to endanger our neighbor’s property in the name of “personal liberty”? If so, I don’t remember that from my high school civics classes.
So, fellow citizens, I’m asking you to be considerate to your neighbors. Please don’t purchase or set off fireworks this year (or any year). Find a safer way to celebrate the 4th of July. Tube the river, go for a bike ride or a hike. Attend a concert or have a picnic with friends and family. If you really need a fireworks display attend one of the public ones that are produced by professionals in safe locations.
To our elected officials, please ban the sale of fireworks immediately and never lift the ban. You are responsible for the safety of your electorate and the protection of their property.
