For those people who don’t want to leave their car in airport parking while they go on a trip, there is a solution. For those who have had a bit too much to drink and need a ride home, there now is a solution. And, for those who need to get from Stevensville to Hamilton, or vice versa, there now is a solution. Dave and Heidi Hammermeister have started Huckleberry Express Taxi, a taxi service based in the Stevensville area.
Last year, Governor Steve Bullock signed a measure that repealed state restrictions allowing taxi services to block new competition. Dave Hammermeister was aware of that bill and decided to take advantage of the situation. After receiving a grant from the Montana State Vocational Rehabilitation and Blind Services, he set about getting a vehicle and putting a business plan together, including getting all the insurances needed.
The couple plans on focusing on the mid valley but can pick up passengers from Sula to Missoula, providing the rider can be reached by vehicle. Hammermeister will do the driving while Heidi stays at home and handles the paperwork, scheduling, and looks after their five children. Hammermeister said his goal is to treat his customers the way he wants to be treated. Add in careful and safe driving and a clean and comfortable mini van and he believes he has the recipe for success.
The taxi industry is still somewhat regulated. Huckleberry Taxi Service’s coverage area is Missoula and Ravalli Counties. The state authorizes the rates but Hammermeister feels his rates are right in line with the other companies. There is an $8 pick up fee and after that, it’s $2.75 per mile. There is a 10 percent discount for senior citizens. They are in the process of applying for Medicaid rides that will help quite a few people in this area, according to Hammermeister.
Huckleberry Express Taxi can be reached at 406-369-3520 for rides and/or more information.
