Answering last week’s guest comment, I’m a cat, dog, horse and cow person. State rights are political powers reserved for the states and not federal. In 1861 they argued over who would have more power as states were being added which meant they would have more votes to pass whatever they wanted. Reading first hand accounts it’s obvious Northerners felt the war was to preserve the Union and Southerners felt they were defending against invaders. At Pickett’s charge the Rebels yelled for your country, family, home and sweetheart. That is what they believed.
Whether you like it or not, slavery happened and you can’t change that. Should we ask other countries who had slaves to take down their flags, perhaps Africa because the blacks sold their own to whites? It gets ridiculous! The flag represented southern secession and nothing more. Getting rid of it is purposely destroying history. You can’t know history by simply talking, you need to study facts and first hand accounts. Little steps are being taken to destroy our history and it’s starting by taking away a historic flag. Your personal history may only differ from mine in that you may have grown up in another state.
Christians don’t want to kill just because others don’t believe the same as they, but Muslims do. Christians don’t hate gays or want to kill them, they hate only the sin, but Muslims do. Senator Sessions said Muslims come take hand outs and now 90% are on welfare, 70% on medical assistance and are demanding their own laws. This is a huge drain on our already bulging budget. I don’t see how you think this is a safe religion to be around.

I guess we can go on quoting things and people at each other, Donna, but since we each probably read and listen to people who already agree with us, there’s not much point. That’s why I had hoped we could meet in person.
Please just note that no other country is telling us what to do about the slavery in our past; it’s for us to resolve as well as we can. And it’s my understanding that the Africans who sold their own into slavery were convinced by the more “civilized” and armed whites that there were more valuable things. They were taken advantage of and learned to take advantage of each other. Are we proud of the lesson we taught?
And the Confederate flag has not been destroyed, but is being put in museums, where it belongs with other historical artifacts. We can continue to fight the Civil War, but I don’t see that it will help anyone.
And you might note that the Ku Klux Klan believes itself to be Christian, and so did the Nazis. Ask any white supremacists you happen to know whether or not they consider themselves Christian and then consider the violence of their tactics. Jesus would not approve. Nor would Jesus approve of Senator Sessions or anyone else who puts money ahead of needy people, wherever they come from, whatever they look like, whatever language they speak.
May we all realize that neither anger nor fear nor any other form of violence will save us and the world we live in!
