Melvin (Mel) Frank Holzwarth was peacefully taken away from us May 20, 2015. He was born September 12, 1927, to Fred and Katherine Holzwarth. Throughout his childhood, Mel lived throughout Eastern Montana and North Dakota until his family finally decided to settle in Glendive.
Mel joined the United States Army and served our country as a Military Police Officer, stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. After leaving the Army, Melvin found himself back in Montana where he met and married Helen Gross in Miles City. In the following years, Mel and Helen found themselves all over Montana; starting a family in Glendive where Mel owned and operated his mechanic shop, all the way to Stevensville where they found a new passion, running a dairy farm. Boating and fishing on lakes, flying small planes, and stock car racing were just a few of Mel’s favorite past times, he later spent his retirement years in Arizona and New Mexico.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Helen Holzwarth, of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico; their four children: Catherine (Nolan) Smith of Philipsburg, Montana, Theresa (Rob) Spencer of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, Jim of Elephant Butte, New Mexico, and Gary of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; his sister, Dorothy Holzwarth of Lynnwood, Washington, and stepbrother Elton Berg of Hillsboro, Kansas; along with five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His parents, brother, and two sisters preceded Melvin in death.
A burial service will be held at The Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Helena, Montana on September 11, 2015 at 2 o‘clock in the afternoon. There will be a reception to follow at the Wingate Hotel, 2007 North Oakes, Helena, Montana.
