The juggernaut that is Corvallis track showed their muscle at the Southwest A Divisional meet in Corvallis over the weekend. The Blue Devil boys’ team scored 154.66 points compared to second place Hamilton’s 119 points. Stevensville tied for third with Dillon with 88 points. The weather was tough and created some problems with the downpours over the two days. The Corvallis girls added up 10 first place finishes and had 203 points in all. Hamilton was second with 159 points including four first place finishes. Dillon was third and Stevensville was fourth.
Although the Corvallis boys notched wins in five events, it was the sheer number of Blue Devils placing in each event that powered them to the title. Taylor Sylvester was a double winner, breaking the tape in the 200 and the 110 hurdles. Tylor Olson claimed the top spot in the javelin with a throw of 191’7”. Jesse Sims took first in the shot put with a throw of 50’5”. Corvallis’ final first place came in the 1,600-meter relay. The team of Josh More, Ridge Albright, Sims and Sylvester won the race in 3:28.54.
The top five finishers in each event advance to the State Class A track meet this week in Laurel. In addition, those athletes who have exceeded the qualifying marks and times throughout the season will also advance. One of those is Jayce Gilder of Corvallis who set a state best in Class A in the discus at the Sapphire Twilight meet. At that time, Gilder threw the discus 161’10”. Gilder didn’t place at divisionals but will still compete at the state meet.
Hamilton had five first place finishes. Kyle Crossman won the 100-meter dash and ran the anchor on the first place 400-relay team. Philip Whitney, Karill Apedail and Ky Burch ran the other three legs of the relay. Josh Triplett won the long jump with a leap of 19’6-1/2”. Casey Ryter jumped 6’2” to clear the bar and win the high jump.
Stevensville’s Jadin Casey won the 400 with a time of 49.29. Daniel Pendergast, the defending state champion, won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.7.
The Corvallis girls were led by Katelyn Frost’s four first place finishes. The reigning state champion in the pole vault claimed the divisional title with a vault of 10’6”. She also won the long jump with a leap of 16’10”. She capped her quest with wins in the 100 meter (12.81) and 200 meter (26.05) races. Jane Booth also repeated in the high jump and will defend her title at state. She cleared 5’4”. Zena Smith was a double winner for Corvallis with a win in the shot put with a put of 33’10”, and a throw of 123’6” in the javelin. Brookelyn Palin won the discus with a throw of 120 feet. Corvallis also had the winning relay team for the 400. The team was made up of Hannah Gale, Penny Jessop, Halee Jessop and Zena Smith.
Hamilton’s Jaycie Schmalz won both distance races. She clocked a 5:18.23 in the 1,600 and then ran the 3,200 in 11:44.50. Annika Moore, the defending state champion in the triple jump, won that event with a hop, skip and jump of 36’5”. Hamilton’s Elise Striebel, Jaylee Albert, Keelie O’Brien and Lyric Devries won the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:13.86.
