A familiar face made an appearance at the Stevensville tennis courts on Thursday. Veteran coach Bill Everett came back to lead the Yellowjackets after Amy Berglund’s departure. (No details were available as to why Berglund left the head coaching position.) Everett, who resigned last year, said he was happy to help out and because he had coached most of the players, he didn’t feel his players would take long to adjust to his coaching style. That’s a good thing because the divisional tennis tournament will begin on Thursday in Butte.
The Stevensville boys defeated Hamilton on Thursday while Hamilton’s girls topped Stevensville. Everett said he had high hopes for his doubles team of Colton Belcourt and Curtis Liston. The duo topped Hamilton’s number one team of Josh Heath and Bridger Palin.
Stevensville played Corvallis on Friday. Corvallis is loaded from top to bottom and was the runner up team at state last year. Belcourt and Liston topped the number one Blue Devil team of Caleb Powell and Riley Jessop in a tough match, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Corvallis’ DJ Pekoc, one of the top singles players in the state, only played on a doubles team at this match.
Corvallis’ Laramie McHugh is the number one player in the conference and the state. She is the defending state champion. She sat out this weekend but will be rested and ready to make another run at the championship beginning on Thursday. Allison Enzler is the number one player for Stevensville. She is coming back from an injury but should be ready to go this week.
