Pressure canner gauge testing
Canning season has arrived. Remember to check the dial gauge on your pressure canner annually for accuracy. The Montana State University Extension Office in Ravalli County provides free pressure dial gauge testing. County Fair Parade sign-ups
Sign-ups for the Ravalli County Fair Parade are being taken at the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce office. The Ravalli County Fair theme this year is “4-H Pride and an 8 Second Ride.” Co-Presidents of the 2013 Leadership Bitterroot class are Anna Green and Nate Blaine. The Leadership Bitterroot class will be putting on the Fair Parade for 2013. The parade will take place on Wednesday, August 28, at 10 a.m. You must register your entry and pick up your number at the Chamber office at 105 East Main. The Chamber office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you have any questions, contact Pat at 363-2400.

Due to the generosity of the community, the Friends of the Bitterroot Public Library have way too many donations in storage in the lead up to the Fall Book Sale (Sept 24-28) and so are giving away surplus items in the library gazebo. Free ticket available

Darby Library hours
The Darby Community Public Library has new hours of operation. The library is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The book drop, located to the left of the front door, is always open and wireless access is available when the library is closed. Stevensville town meeting
An informational meeting to discuss upcoming Stevensville water and sewer/water line replacement projects will be held Wednesday, August 21 at 6 p.m. at the town hall, 206 Buck. During construction water service to residences will be temporarily interrupted to allow for replacement of water main and service lines. Interruption of water service could last 4-8 hours. There will likely be traffic disruptions as well. Residents of Stevensville are encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about the projects and to have their questions answered. Marine Corps League
The Bitterroot Detachment of the Marine Corps League will meet on Thursday, August 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge, 125 N. 2nd St., Hamilton. Membership in the Marine Corps League is open to all Marines (veteran, retired, active, reserve) of all ranks and eras, who have served honorably, and Naval Corpsmen and Navy Chaplains who have served a minimum of 90 days with the FMF. Discussion will be on participation in the 2013 Toys for Tots campaign in the Bitterroot Valley. The Toys for Tots Foundation coordinator for this area, Leah Barker of Stevensville, will be on hand to describe requirements of the program, and specific needs. On Saturday, September 7, the group will meet for SOS breakfast at 9 a.m. at the Hangar Cafe, Ravalli County Airport. All Marines, family members and friends are invited. The Marine Corps League is a veterans organization chartered by Congress whose purpose is to support Marines and Veterans. Bitterroot Detachment activities include Color and Honor Guards, Toys for Tots, Marine and veteran assistance, support of wounded Marines, Marine Corps Birthday Ball, and community functions. The fourth annual Bitterroot Scottish Irish Festival will be held on the beautiful grounds of the Daly Mansion on Aug 24 and 25. This year, in addition to athletic events, dancers, and pipe bands, there will be Scotch and Mead tasting.

Wolf trapping certification classes
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will offer three wolf trapping certification classes in Missoula and one in Anaconda this fall.
Certification is mandatory for anyone planning to trap wolves in Montana, and students who attended a wolf trapping education class last year and received a certificate, do not need to retake one this year.
In Missoula, students can elect to take a class on Sunday, August 25, Saturday, September 14 or Sunday, October 6. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, 5705 Grant Creek Road.
A class is set for Anaconda on Saturday, September 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lee Metcalf Center, 115 E Pennsylvania.
Classes are free of charge, and interested students may register online at fwp.mt.gov and follow the links to “wolf trapping certification.”
In addition to specifics on equipment and techniques, participants will learn about the history, ethics, management, regulations related to wolves and wolf trapping.
Wolf trappers must hold a Montana trapping license and complete the class before heading to the field. Montana’s wolf trapping season runs from Dec. 15, 2013 to Feb. 28, 2014.
Victor Museum Social
The Victor Heritage Museum will hold an old-fashioned Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 25 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the museum, corner of Blake and Main in Victor. This celebration is the museum board’s way of thanking the community for helping to keep the museum open.

The next monthly meeting of the Democrat Mule Team will be Tuesday, August 27 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the backroom at Liaisons Coffee House, 111 N. 2nd in Hamilton. The speaker will be Michael Howell, publisher of the Bitterroot Star. He will be talking about public access to public information and citizens’ right to participate in government.
