Highway median plan modified after public input

July 16, 2013 by Editor

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) conducted an informational meeting to discuss the proposal to cap the median islands on U.S. 93 between Lolo and Hamilton on Wednesday, June 26. MDT has completed the process regarding the current conditions and future maintenance of the median islands and intends to modify the proposed project and add trees and decorative rock to six median island locations.
The six median island locations receiving trees and decorative rock are four islands in the Stevensville area, one island in the Woodside area, and Hamilton. MDT will remove dead and damaged vegetation on the median islands, add decorative concrete and planter boxes. Trees will be planted in these boxes with weed barrier and decorative rock for safer maintenance.
MDT will maintain the trees and the decorative rock upon completion of the median islands project and Ravalli County will provide necessary water to the median islands via the wells and irrigation systems that were constructed as part of the US 93 South Projects. Median islands in the Lolo and Florence communities will be fully capped with decorative concrete as well as two islands in the Stevensville area and two islands in the Woodside area. Ravalli County will maintain the remaining roadside vegetation and landscaping outside the paved area of Highway 93.
These planned modifications are a reflection of the public comments submitted during the informational meeting and extended process. MDT appreciates the efforts of the County, various individuals, and groups participating in the efforts to maintain the median islands.
Gregston Construction will begin in late July and the project is scheduled for tentative completion in mid-September. Reduced speeds should be expected throughout the project; travelers are encouraged to adjust their schedules accordingly. MDT is dedicated to expediting this project and apologizes for any inconvenience.
Motorists are reminded to watch for work crews and equipment as well as signs indicating reduced speed limits and detours. Posted limits are enforced until signs indicate that the work zone has ended. Fines double in work zones.
