The Corvallis Twilight Meet is small by design. The coaches want the feel of the district and divisional meets with smaller numbers of entrants. They also don’t want to be at the track all night. As it was, the event began at 5 on Friday, and didn’t finish until 10:30 under the lights. Hamilton won the boys’ team scoring and Corvallis won the girls’ team scoring.
This track meet run much the same as the state meet with racers being marshaled (kept at one end of the track and marched down the track prior to their race). All of the competitors in the track events and some in the field events are introduced prior to competing.
The distance runners put on quite a show. The boys from Hamilton dominated with Karill Appendale winning the 800, Anthony Schmalz taking the 1,600, and Cameron Meilke winning the 3,200. Meilke was third in the 1,600 as well. Schmalz’ time of 4:34.10 is the fastest 1,600 in Class A at this time. The Hamilton 4×400 relay team also set the fastest time in Class A with a run of 3:34.69. Abe Westfall won the high jump and the triple jump.
Brandon Butt of Corvallis won the discus with a heave of 163’3”. This is the best mark in Class A so far this year. Kyle Ball of Victor won the javelin with a throw of 175’4”, his best effort this year.
The Corvallis girls dominated, earning wins in 14 of 17 events. In the final race of the night, the 4×400 relay team of Lakyn Connors, Kaitlynn Frost, Sadi Henderson, and Ayden Eickhoff put together a near perfect race. By the end of the second lap, Corvallis had a 12 second lead and cruised to a big win. Connors won the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. She also ran on the 4×100 relay team. Joining Connors on the 4×100 relay team were Jessica Lewis, Sadi Hederson and Hannah Gale. Henderson won the 200 and Gale was second in the 100 and 200 meter races. Frost won the pole vault and the long jump, and Eickhoff was the winner of the 1,600. Other Blue Devils who won were Jane Booth in the high jump with a personal best of 5’3”, Hanna Smith in the 800, Kaycie Stewart in the 3,200, Carlie Jessop in the shot put and the discus, and Kayla Lewis in the javelin.
