The Stevensville Main Street Association will host Splendor on Main on Saturday, December 8 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rocky Mountain Bank, 220 Main Street. Clothes Closet opportunities
The Stevensville Clothes Closet, a free store, will host its 2nd annual “Children Only” Christmas shopping day on Saturday, December 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On that day, Clothes Closet will open its doors for children to shop for gifts for their families. Volunteers will help them shop, then help wrap each gift. It’s helpful if each child comes ready with a list of family members to whom they’d like to give. Kids will leave with wrapped gifts ready to put under the tree for their loved ones. The Clothes Closet is in need of goods and volunteers for this event. Men’s socks and small gifts are especially needed. Also needed are gift bags to help streamline the wrapping process and volunteer wrappers. The items can be donated during regular Clothes Closet hours which are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. Interested volunteers can contact Gail Fisher at 777-5694. Nativity display
Historic Saint Mary’s Mission annual display of Nativity Scenes will be on First Friday, December 7. The display will also be shown on December 8 and 9. This year the display will be Nativity Scenes and St. Nicholas. The help of everyone is needed in order for the display to be a success. All the pieces will be in a protected area and well taken care of. Bring your Nativity Scenes and/or St. Nicholas to Historic Saint Mary’s Mission on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. the first week of December and pick them up December 11 through 14. SAFE Giving Tree
Now through December 19th, SAFE is sponsoring the Annual Holiday Giving Tree for the Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing and Outreach residents. Each family has ornaments on the tree asking for gifts they cannot afford to provide for their families. SAFE is asking anyone who is interested in helping a family who has been affected by domestic violence to choose an ornament from the tree and return a gift unwrapped or in gift bags by December 19. Boating safety class
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will offer a boating safety class on Thursday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the FWP office, 3201 Spurgin Road, Missoula. Montana had 11 boating fatalities in 2012 and six of these deaths occurred west of the Continental Divide. The class will include an overview of boating safety equipment requirements and the rules of safe operation. Montana law requires youth 13 and 14 years of age to pass a boating safety course in order to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft without an adult on board. Class participants will learn how to obtain the motorboat operator certificate. Paddle craft operators will learn about training for non-motorized vessels, too. The class is free of charge and is open to anyone who operates a motorized or non-motorized boat. Class participants should be at least 12 years old and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Art exhibit
Barbara Michelman’s show of her project entitled “Past is Prologue” will open on Pearl Harbor Day, Friday, December 7 at The Frame Shop and Gallery, 325 Main in Hamilton. A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. This combination of the artist’s photo montages with her written commentary produces a heartfelt depiction of Nazi horrors inflicted on her Lithuanian relatives. NVPL First Friday
December First Friday in Stevensville is one of the community’s highlight events. First time homebuyer classes
The Bitter Root Resource Conservation & Development Area, Inc. (RC&D) is holding a nationally certified homebuyer education class on December 10, 11 and 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. (each night) at the Human Resource Council Building, 316 N. Third St., Hamilton. Call the Bitter Root RC&D office at 363-5450 to reserve a space. Attendance on all three nights is required for certification. The charge is $40 to cover the cost of reference materials. (If you are buying your home as a couple, one household, you both need to attend the class.) The class is especially beneficial to first-time homebuyers with below median incomes, but any potential homebuyer will benefit from the class. Anyone who has not owned a home for 3 or more years is considered a first-time homebuyer and may be able to purchase a home for monthly payments comparable to what they are paying in rent. The current market is right for homebuyers. Completion of this class is required in order to qualify for some of the special homebuyer loan assistance programs.
CHS Madrigal Dinner
Amid roving minstrels and the cries of “Wassail, Wassail,” you are invited to begin the holiday season by attending the “Merry Olde Madrigal Dinners” presented by the Corvallis Vocal Music Department directed by Nancy Brown. The dates for the festivities are December 10 and 11 at the Cornerstone Church in Hamilton, at 6:30 p.m. Plans are in full swing to recreate all the pomp and charm of the Renaissance era. Costume design is by Gretchen Spiess. Jugglers, beggars, and musicians traditionally mingle with the guests offering their yuletide greeting in word and song. There will be song, dance, and skits presented by the CHS Vocal Music Department. A full dinner will be served including salad, main course, dessert, wassail, tea, and coffee. Joe, a successful tycoon, gets a visit from a messenger from God, not unlike Job. Joe refuses to denounce God and a wave of awful things happen to him in a hilarious and thoughtful revamp of the Book of Job. Cross Country Ski Club
Manager Buffie Cerutti’s program for the Bitterroot Cross Country Ski Club’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 12 at 7 p.m. will chronicle the saga of the Lolo Pass Area and Visitor Information Center. With a rich history dating to an ancient trail, Lolo Pass was used by the Nez Perce to travel east to hunt buffalo and by the Salish traveling west to fish for salmon. The Pass was crossed by Lewis and Clark in 1805 and during the Nez Perce War in 1877. Travelers now visit Lolo Pass as a major trail head for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter and endless other attractions during all seasons. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear about a unique Bitterroot landmark from an expert. The Club will also host its annual Potluck Dinner at 6 p.m. sharp. The Bitterroot Public Library’s Fellowship Club will be meeting on Thursday, December 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss “Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao” by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer. In this book Dr. Dyer has reviewed hundreds of translations of the Tao Te Ching and has written 81 distinct essays on how to apply the ancient wisdom of Lao-tzu to today’s modern world. This work contains the entire 81 verses of the Tao, compiled from Wayne’s researching of 10 of the most well-respected translations of text that have survived for more than 25 centuries. RASS training
State-mandated Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service training (RASS) will be held Tuesday, December 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at 209 N. 10th Street, Suite C, Hamilton. Any community members who are not yet certified are welcome to attend and newly hired employees may take the training within 60 days of hire. There is a $15 materials fee. Call Ryan at 532-9146 to preregister by the day before the class is held. At least five participants are needed to hold the class.

Christmas Eve Service
