I would like to thank the Main Street Association, the Design Committee and Community Donors, for helping to create a more attractive, enticing and safer Main Street.
The improvements have been a long time coming with little increments along the way. Perhaps it started in the 1980’s with people like Dan Severson wanting to see trees along the street. Then the Garden Club and the Civic Club worked to get planters. And there was the acquisition of the Creamery Park and benches.
In 1996, the Stevensville Focus Group was sponsored by the Stevensville Civic Club in order to work with the Montana Department of Transportation to design the improvements for Highway 93. The Focus Group wanted to include the access to Stevensville and the Town itself. Roughly 125 people attended a three-day Walkable Communities workshop to create a vision of a more enticing, walkable and livable community.
Out of that came many great thoughts such as a Main Street Association, extending our bike path to the Highway, around the Town and to the Refuge, safer crosswalks, nicer planters and benches and other ideas. Establishing a Main Street Association has been one of the biggest successes with their many efforts to support businesses. And now we have the great street improvements along our Main Street.
