‘Monthly Grind’ variety show
The next Monthly Grind variety show will be held Saturday, October 20 at 7 p.m. at the Stevensville Playhouse. The $5.00 tickets are sold at the door so don’t be late. Audubon calendar sale
The Bitterroot Audubon Society will be selling its 2013 calendar at the Hamilton Farmers Market. This one-of-a-kind calendar is by Bitterroot photographers of Bitterroot birds, with drawings by Bitterroot 3rd and 4th graders, plus “hot spots” where you can find particular birds in our valley. The cost is $15 and all proceeds go to the Bitterroot Audubon Education Fund. Bitterroot Mushers raffle
The Bitterroot Mushers are having a fundraising raffle. The grand prize is a 14-mile dogsled ride with junior Iditarod finisher, Aiyana Ferraro. Other prizes include: a one night stay for two at Lost Trail Hot Springs Resort with two 1-day lift tickets to Lost Trail Powder Mountain, $50 gift certificate for Darby Distribution, $40 gift certificate to the Naughty Moose Restaurant, 1-hour session of Positive Changes LLC PUSH muscle therapy, and a gift basket from Darby Wine and Spirits. Darby Bread Box collections
For the months of October and November, the Darby Bread Box is collecting peanut butter, stuffing and pumpkin pie mix. You can drop off the donated items at Peoples Market and the Bitterroot Credit Union in Darby.

County recycling
Ravalli Recycling is open Mondays from 3 to 6 p.m. or dusk, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon (Sat. only buying aluminum cans, scrap metals and car batteries). #1 and #2 plastics, cardboard (flattened and no wax), telephone books, magazines and tin cans are currently being accepted. Containers must be rinsed and no lids or caps are accepted. The recycling center is located at 131 Old Corvallis Road, Hamilton, next to Habitat for Humanity, www.ravallirecycling.org for more information. The center is 99% run by volunteers. RSVP coat drive
The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will be holding its third annual winter coat drive. Coats of all sizes are needed along with gloves, scarves and hats. Everything collected will go to organizations that help families in need. Good quality, clean items will be collected at the RSVP Volunteer Center during regular business hours, October 15-October 31, and at the North Valley Public Library on Saturday, October 20 from 10 am to 12 noon. HHS bands fruit sale
The Hamilton High School Bands are currently taking orders for fresh citrus fruit including naval oranges, grapefruit, and mandarin oranges which will be delivered during the second week in December. The citrus is picked fresh in southern California and delivered to Hamilton within days of harvest. It’s a healthy alternative to most fundraisers and the fruit is delivered just in time for the holidays. The citrus is sold in boxes of 20 lbs. and 40 lbs. Bitterroot College benefit
University of Montana geography faculty member Rick Graetz and his wife, Susie, will present a narration and slideshow of their scenic photography of Montana’s mountains and prairie in a lecture titled “This is Montana” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Hamilton High School Performing Arts Center. The presentation of stories and images is a benefit for Bitterroot College of UM science instruction.
Rick Graetz is co-director of UM’s Crown of the Continent Initiative and founder of Montana Magazine. He and Susie are renowned for their geographic and historic articles and photography, and in 2003 published “This is Montana,” a collection of 151 essays and 124 photographs. They also have written 18 other books on Montana and penned the syndicated newspaper column of the same name.
Tickets for the event cost $5 for general public and $3 for seniors and students. They can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling Bitterroot College at 375-0100. Copies of “This is Montana” also will be available for $25 at the event, with half of the proceeds benefiting BC. State-mandated Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service training (RASS) will be held Thursday, October 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at 209 N. 10th Street, Suite C, Hamilton. Museum exhibit opening

Mature driving class
An AARP Driver Safety Class will be presented at Marcus Daly Hospital in Hamilton on Thursday, October 18. The class begins at 6 p.m. and will last approximately four hours. This safe driving strategies class is designed for drivers age 50 and over but all drivers are welcome. There is no written test. Montana mandates an insurance discount for qualified graduates. The class fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Attendees are requested to bring a check made out to “AARP” for class fees. Pre-registration is requested. Museum exhibits opening
Two exhibits will open on Thursday, October 18 with a 6 p.m. reception at the Ravalli County Museum, 205 Bedford, Hamilton.
“Animal Eyes” centers around a panel of 60+ different glass animal eyes…everything from huge saucer-sized eyes of an oceanic Marlin fish down to tiny red dots of a wood duck…elk to elephant, alligator to mountain lion, you’ll find it on this unique panel. The eyes are displayed in a manner that encourages interaction and onlookers are encouraged to touch the glass eyes to feel the shapes and sizes, a fun way for all ages to examine the variety of eyes in the animal world.
The Radial Symmetry Table blends art, science, and math into an interesting hands-on experience. Radial symmetry is a common form in nature, can be described mathematically, has pleasing artistic aesthetics, and ties to cultural norms in many countries. Hundreds of colorful tiles in many shapes offer unlimited creative options for participants. Three sections allow guests to use the exhibit simultaneously.

The Hamilton-Bitterroot PFLAG invites other families and the community to listen to the “coming out” stories of their families as told by local parents of lesbians and gays. Stevensville Playhouse auditions
Auditions for “The Littlest Angel” will be held on Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stevensville Playhouse. This classic tale of a small mischievous child new to heaven will be performed November 30, December 1, 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 7:30 p.m. with two matinees on December 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. The cast will be one main older actor, two middle age or older actors and a lot of teens and children. The lead actor must be small, young and be able to carry the play with many lines and lots of action. This is the musical version so all actors must be able to sing.
