Dear Editor,
What is it that attracts career politicians, exposed to heavy lobbying, to want to become Public Service Commissioners? In District 4 we have an incumbent and a candidate that both have those credentials. And now states are wisely considering not allowing Public Service Commissioners to vote on issues affecting utility companies if they have a conflict of interest. Are we going to elect commissioners who can’t regulate the utilities they were elected to regulate? Both Commissioner Gail Gutsche and PSC candidate Bob Lake have received political lobbying and contributions from political professionals that regularly appear before the Commission. If they are barred from voting on the Commission then what good is it to elect them? Only one candidate I know of has pledged not to take money from those regulated by the Commission. He is Jim Pearson.
