The Bitterroot Warriors Rugby team held a tournament on Saturday at the Corvallis Events Center complex. Teams from Frenchtown, Missoula and two teams from the Flathead area as well as the local Warriors team competed against one another. Two girls’ teams, Frenchtown and Bitterroot, as well as two junior high teams competed in this fast growing sport as well. The Warriors have 33 players on their roster. Players come from all over the valley with a mix of both traditional and home school athletes. Most have some other athletic experience such as wrestling, soccer or football. The rugby season lasts from now until the last weekend in May when the state championship will be determined. Teams from Billings, Great Falls, Kalispell, Missoula, Frenchtown, Sims and the Bitterroot will compete for the trophy. Last year, the Warriors won the event. Jim Kostecki is the coach for the boy’s high school team while Matt Kanenwisher is the junior high coach. There is also a touch rugby program in the summer for third, fourth and fifth grade players.
