A check valve failure at the Cenex Mountain West store and gas station on Main Street in Stevensville led to a gas spill that had the Stevenville Fire Department, Stevensville Public Works Department as well as Cenex employees scrambling Wednesday morning. The gas came out of the overflow and dumped onto the roof of the tin building that houses the agriculture division of Mountain West in Stevensville. Additionally, more gas came through the overflow pipe near the gas tanks. The spill was estimated to be about 50 gallons with 95 percent of the gas flowing onto pavement and asphalt and about 5 percent going onto bare ground. Stevensville mayor Gene Mim Mack said an environmental team will be brought in to do the clean up on the bare ground. Absorbent pads were used to mop up the gas from the pavement area. Cenex immediately brought in a pump repairman to fix the check valve. Once the environmental cleanup is done, the business will reopen.
