Importance of fiscal oversight

February 28, 2012 by Editor

I hope to help the residents of Stevensville to understand all that they read. An article published 02/15/2012 covered concerns regarding the posting of funds by Town of Stevensville to the General Fund. It was indicated that posting and reconciliation had not taken place for seven months. What remains unsaid is that a number of elected officials had oversight responsibility and failed to insure funds were accounted for. Is the budget in jeopardy, because the Town really does not know if it has stayed within the set budget? Councilor Perrin hit the nail right on the head, “as a council there is no higher priority because without it (funds reconciliation) they don’t know that they have any money to spend”. The person recently hired to enter all this data, balance accounts once the data has been entered and try and determine if any funds are missing (I am not implying there are any missing funds) is facing an enormous task. That will leave very little time to reduce budget expenditures if required as the Town is in the middle of the third quarter (roughly four months left in the fiscal year). The most positive action a Stevensville resident can take is to elect intelligent and qualified candidates to office. Persons who are willing to really dedicate the time it takes to be informed. The reason it matters is now evident.
