Nellie Moran awarded P.E.O. scholarship
Nellie Moran, the daughter of Dr. Michael and Mrs. Terry Moran was recently presented with $2,500 scholarship. She is attending Pacific Lutheran University and studying International Relations and French this fall.
This scholarship is based on excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success. The program is open to young women who are citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States or Canada and who are graduating high school seniors at the time of application. They must also be recommended by a P.E. O. Chapter.
The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is an international philanthropic and educational organization which promotes increased educational opportunities for women. There are approximately 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with more the 350,000 initiated members. The P.E.O. Sisterhood has given nearly $190 million in financial assistance to more than 80,000 women. The P.E.O. Sisterhood also owns Cottey College, a two-year liberal arts college in Nevada, Missouri. Forest seeks public comment on project
The Bitterroot National Forest has released its Environmental Assessment (EA) of the Three Saddle Vegetation Management Project and is inviting the public to review and make comments on the proposal. The project area encompasses approximately 6,300 acres and is located in the Sapphire Mountains near Three Mile and Ambrose Creeks on the Stevensville Ranger District.
The Three Saddle Project is designed to improve forest health and resiliency to fires, insects and disease while also addressing needed soil rehabilitation and watershed improvements. The project will provide forest products, jobs, and income to the local economy. Project specifics include:
• Commercial timber harvest (logging) on 1,291 acres
• Non-commercial thinning to reduce tree densities on 469 acres
• Prescribed fire to improve wildlife habitat and ecosystem restoration on 389 acres.
The proposal also includes decommissioning or storing approximately 9 miles of roads that are no longer needed or used for recreation or resource management. Hard copies as well as CD’s containing the EA are available at both the Bitterroot National Forest Supervisor’s office in Hamilton and the Stevensville Ranger District. Comments on the EA are due by September 21, 2011 and should be sent to the Forest Supervisor’s Office, 1801 North 1st Street, Hamilton MT 59840-3114.

Corvallis business gets energy grant
Brandborg and Associates to receive grant for energy improvements
U.S. Senator Jon Tester today announced that Brandborg and Associates of Corvallis will receive a grant to install a geothermal heat pump.
“Small businesses across rural Montana continue to be recognized for their ability to create jobs and get our economy back on track,” Tester said. “Investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency will not only help Montana’s small businesses lower energy costs, but also increase rural America’s economic competitiveness. Focusing on these kinds of smart investments will grow our economy and lead to energy independence.”

Nadine Roberts Baker Buell
Nadine Roberts Baker Buell, 89, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Bitterroot Valley Living Center in Stevensville.
Nadine was born in Yakima, WA on February 26, 1922. Nadine worked at Twin City Foods. She loved animals, flowers, cooking and canning.
Nadine was preceded in death by her father Don Roberts and mother Edna Roberts, brothers and sisters Ruth Murrow, Cecil Roberts, Leona Casady, Millie Tresner, Herb Roberts and Barbra Fesner.
Nadine is survived by her daughter Ruetta Baker Sullivan and husband Jim of Florence, Montana, son Donald Baker and wife Mary of Twin Falls, Idaho, 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 10 great, great grandchildren.
Services will be at a later date.
Clyde M. Ragsdale
Clyde Merton Ragsdale, 85, of Stevensville, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at home surrounded by family and his dogs.
He was born June 21, 1926, in Rose Hill, CA, to John and Daisy Ragsdale. He was raised in Santa Monica, CA, with six brothers and three sisters.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and proudly served his country during World War II and the Korean War, where he was one of the surrounded Marines at the Chosin Reservoir. He was released from active duty on July 5, 1951, and he married his sweetheart, Doris, two days later in Santa Monica, CA. He was honorably discharged August 14, 1951.
Clyde and Doris lived in Los Angeles, CA, where Clyde was a Plant Manager for American Ceramics Products, Winfield Division, in Santa Monica, CA, and Painter Working Supervisor for L.A. County at USC Medical Center. He earned his diploma by attending night classes at University High School. He raised four children: Robert, Judy, Beverly, and James. In 1993, he moved to Stevensville, where he was actively involved in the Marine Corps League and the American Legion.
His hobbies were fishing, traveling, drawing, and spending time with family and friends. He recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary and his 85th birthday.
He is survived by his wife, Doris, Stevensville; sisters, Ollie, Seaside, OR, Daisy, Granada Hills, CA, and Donna, Red Bluff, CA; daughter, Beverly, Stevensville; son, Robert, Kansas City, MO; and 18 grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Irvin, Kelly, Vernon, Lyle, Leonard, and Clarence; daughter, Judy; and son, James.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park in Stevensville. A reception following the service will be held at the American Legion Hall in Stevensville. A private burial at Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Missoula will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Marine Corps League, Bitterroot Valley Detachment #937, or to the American Legion Post #94.
