DESCRIPTION:The Bitterroot River is made from countless tributaries – and two major headwaters. Come learn about the unique values and threats facing those two headwaters – the East Fork and the West Fork of the Bitterroot River – and the work being done to protect and restore these critical\, though distinct\, fish and wildlife habitats. While fish habitat on the East Fork is threatened by sediment pollution and warming waters\, the headwaters of the West Fork produces some of the coldest\, cleanest water entering the Bitterroot. However\, a potential mine at this headwaters site\, jeopardizes all that and much more.

SUMMARY:POETS IN THE ‘ROOT A Celebration of  Natural History and Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Nature has always inspired poets! And\, poetry seeks to both instruct and delight. Poets in the ‘Root combines the magic and biology of nature. One person reads a poem or part of a poem that uses an element of nature to convey its message. Then the same or another person gives an explanation (5 minutes max) of some aspect of that nature element. The explanation focuses on the scientific interpretation of the nature element within the poem. Listeners get a bit of poetry and a bit of natural history.\nAnyone can volunteer to read a poem and/or offer nature interpretation. Some read poems by others\, but if you’re a poet\, we’d love to hear your own work.

DESCRIPTION:Bitterroot Audubon Program: Exploring Changes In the Size of Birds \nBitterroot Audubon’s May program will feature a presentation by Dr. Thomas Riecke\, the James K. Ringelman Chair in Waterfowl Conservation at UM. Dr Reicke will discuss monitoring data that has revealed that many birds are becoming smaller-bodied and longer-winged globally. As an example\, he’ll use data on white-throated dippers color-banded in Switzerland that show that smaller-bodied\, longer-winged dippers survive and reproduce at greater rates during warmer years. He’ll also use these data to explore the consequences of mating strategies (i.e.\, monogamy v. polygyny) and age on reproductive success. \nThis program will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday\, May 20 in the Education Building\, adjacent to the Slack Barn at Teller Wildlife Refuge at 1180 Chaffin Lane in Corvallis.
