SUMMARY:Paper Theater: A Fantastical Forest Cut & Layered (Adult Craft)
DESCRIPTION:Paper cutting is a fascinating art form practiced in China and Japan\, Germany\, Poland\, and beyond. However diverse the styles\, techniques\, and traditions of the craft\, paper cutting around the world seem to have one thing in common: They usually feature creatures or scenes from folk or fairytales. \nIn the spirit of this tradition\, we will cut images from paper and layer them to create a multi-dimensional forest scene complete with mushrooms\, flora\, and a fantastical character or creature that you choose from among several options. All participants will use the same template but the colors\, textures\, and focal point you select make for an enchanting scene that is uniquely your own. \nThis is a 2-part class. Participants will need to attend both sessions to complete their project. You will automatically be registered for Part 2 of 2 on Thursday\, July 24 at 6pm.

DESCRIPTION:As of 2022\, Montana has the highest suicide rate in the nation (cdc.gov)\, a rate that has increased by 43.5% since 2020. \nLearn how to respond to someone considering or at-risk of suicide during this workshop by Tamarack Grief Resource Center. \nQuestion\, Persuade\, Refer (QPR) is a suicide prevention training that teaches participants to respond empathetically and effectively to someone thinking about suicide. \nQPR teaches us to recognize the warning signs of a suicidal crisis and connecting someone in crisis with helping resources. This workshop covers 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help support someone who is thinking about suicide: \n\nHaving a conversation about suicide\nOffering hope\nConnecting someone to resources.\n\nQPR is appropriate for any adult interested in learning how they can be part of reducing suicide in their community.

SUMMARY:Western Montana's Restricted Districts 1870-1840s
DESCRIPTION:This program will dive into the rich history of the restricted–red light–districts in Missoula and Hamilton\, spanning between the region’s earliest red-light settlement in 1870 through the deaths of the original founders in the early 1940s. \nThroughout the talk\, we will look at the influence these ostracized communities had on the socio-cultural development of the Western Montana region\, particularly in the Bitterroot Valley\, as well as the interconnected relationships shared between the varying districts that provided the foundation for survival in the American West. Additionally\, we will also look into the lives of some of the districts’ key members such as Clara and Henry Smith\, Frank Gray\, Tish Nevins\, Sam Tom\, and Mary Gleim. \nThis lecture will take a deep dive into the region’s diverse demographics at the turn of the 20th century as well as showcase just how these forgotten Montanans paved the way for our society today. \nThis program is part of the Montana Library Network’s virtual programming series. NVPL will host a watch party; the presenter will not be on-site. Zoom option available.
