DESCRIPTION:At the Thursday\, February 20 meeting of Trout Unlimited\, TU special projects manager Christine Brissette will present “What’s new at TU\,” an overview of current and proposed BRTU projects. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Elks Club\, 203 State Street in Hamilton. The public is invited to attend and there is no charge for admission. \nBitterroot TU has been working to make our fishery – and fishing – better since its inception in the 1970’s. In 2017\, BRTU’s on-the-ground restoration program got a boost with the hire of Christine Brissette\, National TU’s Bitterroot Project Manager. In April 2018\, Christine gave a program on a nascent set of fish screen projects and enormous progress has been made since then! \nCome learn about the projects Christine has been working on in our streams\, and hear what’s on the horizon for restoration in the Bitterroot. DESCRIPTION:MFWP Fisheries Division Administrator Eileen Ryce\, also known as the “Fish Chief\,” will give a presentation about “strategies for protecting native trout in a changing climate” at the Trout Unlimited meeting on Thursday\, January 16 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Elks Club at 203 State Street. \nBorn in Scotland\, Eileen Ryce moved to Montana in 1997 to do a PhD at MSU on aquatic invasive species. At the time\, whirling disease was naively thought to be the biggest threat Montana’s fisheries would ever face. In 2004\, she started work as manager of the MFWP’s new Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program. Eileen was named Administrator of the Fisheries Division in 2017 and is facing off with a battalion of challenges like AIS\, illegal introductions\, habitat degradation while managing 400 employees\, 12 hatcheries and 335 fishing access sites.\nHowever\, a changing climate with warming water temperatures and low flows poses a true existential threat transcending other issues. The “Fish Chief” will describe the current situation as well projected trends\, and relate what steps are being taken to vouchsafe Montana’s singular wild and native trout fisheries\, as well as other irreplaceable aquatic species. \nThe public is invited to attend and there is no charge for admission. Do yourself a favor this holiday season and skip all the fuss of baking those holiday sweet treats and waiting in long lines to buy gifts by attending this unique “Cookie Walk\, Bake Sale & More” to benefit the Bitter Root Humane Association on Saturday\, December 8 at the Elks Lodge in Hamilton. Talented area bakers have been busy whipping up their favorite holiday cookies in every flavor\, shape and size. Shoppers can tour the cookie tables and choose their favorites in any quantity (sold by the pound) and stock up on all the other individually priced sweet treats of pies\, cakes\, breads and candies\, and of course\, there will also be goodies for our four legged furry friends! To round out the event\, some great gift and decorating items\, including unusual cookie jars and tins\, handmade holiday stockings\, holiday jewelry\, beautiful decorated “live” swags and potted South African Amaryllis plants along with whimsical pet items will also be on the sale tables to treat yourself or all those lucky folks on your holiday shopping list! To accommodate shoppers\, more cashiers will be on hand and this year’s event is being held at the larger Elks Lodge\, located at 203 State Street in Hamilton; the doors will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday\, December 8th.
