DESCRIPTION:Montana waters are under assault from Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and it seems like every week or so another aquatic alien or terrorist is identified. Sometimes they are fish dumped from a home aquarium or live baitbox\, or an escapee from an unlicensed private pond\, and sometimes they hitchhike on fishing boots\, tackle or watercraft from other states. No matter the source\, they pose a serious threat to our trout fisheries and streams. \nIf you would like to learn more and understand what MFWP is doing to protect our resources\, attend the BRTU meeting on Thursday\, October 17.  The program will focus on Aquatic Invasive Species\, “plants\, animals or pathogens not native to Montana that can cause harm.” MFWP has a vigorous monitoring program\, backed up by laws and regulations\, to prevent these AIS from getting into the waters and to deal with them if they show up. So far the program has been pretty successful but a slip up or two could produce irremediable damage. \nTayler Templin is the MFWP Northwest Area AIS Supervisor. She will provide an overview of the AIS program and describe some of the challenges and near misses that have been encountered. As the number of anglers and boaters coming to Montana increases\, the risk of an AIS introduction increases pari passu. However\, there are some simple steps that we as sportsmen and conservationists can take to minimize risks and to educate others. \nThe meeting will be at the Hamilton Elks Club at 203 State Street in Hamilton. The program will begin at 7:00 pm on Thursday\, October 17\, but come on down at 5:45 to join TU for a beer and one of the Elks Club legendary brats cooked in beer\, grilled and served with onions and ‘kraut. \nThere is no charge for admission and the public is invited to attend. DESCRIPTION:The Teller Wildlife Refuge Education program will be featured at November 17 BRTU meeting at the Hamilton Elks Lodge. The program starts at 7 p.m. \nNicole Ballard\, Teller Wildlife Refuge Education Program Director\, will give a presentation about Nurturing Nature in the Bitterroot Valley through conservation education. In the last year\, Nicole has grown the conservation education program at Teller by almost 300%. Join Nicole to learn about Teller’s program and the importance of conservation education in our community. The refuge is one of BRTU’s most enduring partners and TU and the refuge have worked together for close to 40 years on education\, restoration and conservation projects. \nNicole recently received the prestigious Emerging Conservationist Award from the Missoula Conservation Roundtable for emerging leadership in the field of natural resource management or environmental protection through individual action and effective partnerships.  \nAfter Nicole’s talk\, there will be a special drawing for a copy of “The View from Tawney’s Rock\,” by Monte Dolack. This beautiful print depicts a spot on one of the Refuge streams near where Nicole teaches many classes. The prints are no longer commercially available so this is a rare chance to add one to your collection of fine conservation art. There will also be a drawing for some Teller Refuge caps and all the proceeds will go to Nicole’s education programs. \nNicole’s presentation will start at 7 p.m.\, but come down early for a beer and a chance to meet Nicole and catch up with old friends. \nAnd remember that the public is invited to attend all BRTU events and there is no charge for admission.

DESCRIPTION:At the Thursday\, February 20 meeting of Trout Unlimited\, TU special projects manager Christine Brissette will present “What’s new at TU\,” an overview of current and proposed BRTU projects. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Elks Club\, 203 State Street in Hamilton. The public is invited to attend and there is no charge for admission. \nBitterroot TU has been working to make our fishery – and fishing – better since its inception in the 1970’s. In 2017\, BRTU’s on-the-ground restoration program got a boost with the hire of Christine Brissette\, National TU’s Bitterroot Project Manager. In April 2018\, Christine gave a program on a nascent set of fish screen projects and enormous progress has been made since then! \nCome learn about the projects Christine has been working on in our streams\, and hear what’s on the horizon for restoration in the Bitterroot. DESCRIPTION:MFWP Fisheries Division Administrator Eileen Ryce\, also known as the “Fish Chief\,” will give a presentation about “strategies for protecting native trout in a changing climate” at the Trout Unlimited meeting on Thursday\, January 16 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Elks Club at 203 State Street. \nBorn in Scotland\, Eileen Ryce moved to Montana in 1997 to do a PhD at MSU on aquatic invasive species. At the time\, whirling disease was naively thought to be the biggest threat Montana’s fisheries would ever face. In 2004\, she started work as manager of the MFWP’s new Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program. Eileen was named Administrator of the Fisheries Division in 2017 and is facing off with a battalion of challenges like AIS\, illegal introductions\, habitat degradation while managing 400 employees\, 12 hatcheries and 335 fishing access sites.\nHowever\, a changing climate with warming water temperatures and low flows poses a true existential threat transcending other issues. The “Fish Chief” will describe the current situation as well projected trends\, and relate what steps are being taken to vouchsafe Montana’s singular wild and native trout fisheries\, as well as other irreplaceable aquatic species. \nThe public is invited to attend and there is no charge for admission.
