SUMMARY:The Lentil Underground: Renegade Farmers of Montana (watch party)
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of the past three decades\, Montana has become one of the leading states in the country in both organic agriculture and production of lentils\, a key organic rotation crop that is high in protein and micronutrients. The story of how we got here is a fascinating and heartwarming tale of farmers recognizing existential challenges facing their communities and banding together to create solutions. \nTonight\, we’ll hear about Montana’s organic agriculture movement and pulse crop revolution from one of the farmers at the center of the story: David Oien\, Founding Farmer of Timeless Seeds in Ulm. Moderating this conversation will be Missoula-born Liz Carlisle\, author of the books Lentil Underground\, Grain by Grain (with Bob Quinn)\, and Healing Grounds. Liz is an Associate Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at UC Santa Barbara. \nCo-Hosted as part of the Montana Library Network Virtual Programming series ~ This is a watch party at North Valley Public Library\, the speakers will appear via Zoom.

SUMMARY:IndigiKitchen with Mariah Gladstone (Zoom Watch Party)
DESCRIPTION:What are indigenous foods\, where do we get them\, and how do we prepare them? Many native North American foods\, both cultivated and harvested\, were removed from our diets through intentional colonial efforts. Mariah Gladstone is leading the way in a food movement that is revitalizing and incorporating these important foods into the contemporary diet. During her cooking demonstration\, she will prepare one of her original recipes and showcase other indigenous foods that can easily be used in your own kitchen. \nMeet the Speaker \nMariah Gladstone\, Piikuni (Blackfeet) and Tsalagi (Cherokee)\, grew up in Northwest Montana on and near the Blackfeet Reservation. She graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Environmental Engineering and returned home where she began her work on food advocacy. She developed Indigikitchen\, an online cooking platform\, to revitalize and re-imagine Native foods. \nMariah has been recognized as a Champion for Change by the Center for Native American Youth and a Dreamstarter by the Running Strong for American Indian Youth foundation. She is currently a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leader\, a MIT Solve Indigenous Communities Fellow\, and a Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellow. Gladstone earned a Master’s degree at SUNY-ESF in the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. SUMMARY:About Noxious Weeds
DESCRIPTION:What is a Noxious Weed?\nNoxious weeds are non-native plants that have been introduced to Ravalli County through human actions both purposely and accidentally. Due to their aggressive growth and lack of natural enemies\, these species can be highly destructive\, competitive\, and difficult to control.  Presented by Kellieann Morris\, Coordinator with the Ravalli County Weed District. \nNoxious weeds reduce crop yields\, edge out native plant communities that wildlife and fish depend on and degrade wildlife habitat. The damages from noxious weeds can cost landowners\, ranchers and farmers millions of dollars in loss of production and control efforts. These costs can be transferred to consumers through higher food costs. Noxious weeds also damage recreational sites\, clog waterways\, lower land values\, and can poison livestock. \nAn invasive species can become a noxious weed when it has shown to have serious effects on natural resources\, ecosystem health and our economy. \nIf you have any questions about potential noxious weeds on your property The Ravalli County Weed District can assist you with identifying noxious weeds and give you advice on their control.

SUMMARY:What Ever Happened to the News?
DESCRIPTION:In person or Via Zoom with Dennis Swibold. Never has so much news been available. The trick is knowing how to find it—and how to judge its credibility. This program—presented by a veteran journalist\, author and educator—takes listeners behind the curtain to reveal how the news is made and explain the revolutionary changes facing today’s fast-paced news media. It also offers citizens tools and techniques for staying well-informed amid the virtual blizzard of information—and for participating directly in the civic debates crucial to their communities\, state and nation. \nSponsored in part by  Humanities Montana. Please register on the North Valley Public Library’s Calendar. \nDennis Swibold\, of Missoula\, Montana\, is a professor and director at the University of Montana’s School of Journalism where he has taught for 27 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Arizona in 1979 and a master’s in journalism from UM in 1991. Dennis is the author of “Copper Chorus: Mining\, Politics and the Montana Press\, 1889-1959\,” a history of industrial domination of Montana newspapers. The work won the Western Writers of America’s 2007 award for best work of contemporary nonfiction. He continues to research and report on public affairs issues and lead conversations about the changing face of journalism.
