SUMMARY:Fly Fishers of the Bitterroot
DESCRIPTION:  \nFly Fishers of the Bitterroot will meet Tuesday\, January 8 at BJ’s Restaurant in Hamilton. Social hour is 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with the presentation starting at 7 p.m. Cocktails and dinner are optional. The presentation is “Fishing Christmas Island” is by member Greg Chester. Greg is well known in the community for his excellent fly tying. He started fly fishing in 1974 in Southern California for warm water species. After numerous trips to the Sierras\, trout fishing soon became a favorite. Greg is a charter member of the FFB and has served as President of the Bitterroot Chapter of Trout Unlimited for the past three years. Greg will show members why Christmas Island is considered one of the top salt water flats fishing destinations in the world. The atoll surrounds a pristine lagoon with stunning beaches\, extensive bird life and a friendly Micronesian culture. Within the lagoon are bone fish and a variety of trevally species. Outside the lagoon there is outstanding Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo fishing opportunities. Seeing this slide show is the next best thing to being there! DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Friends of Fort Owen is sponsoring an evening lecture by Sally Thompson: “A Strange Story of John Owen and Father De Smet\, Spring 1859” on Thursday\, January 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the North Valley Public Library\, 208 Main Street\, Stevensville. Two contemporaries acting as an agent for the U.S. Government escorted “Indian chiefs” from the Bitterroots to Fort Vancouver in April 1859. Their conflicting records of the story provide some interesting details about life at that pivotal time in regional history\, while leaving some significant unanswered questions. Sally Thompson is a well-known scholar and author whose main interest for over 40 years has been working with the native tribes of the West. She is trained as an anthropologist\, has interviewed over 200 elders and educators from 37 tribes\, worked with Kootenai and Blackfeet elders on a book\, “People Before the Park\,” about their seasonal rounds through Glacier National Park\, and has published a recent article\, “John Owen’s Worst Trip\,” in the Spring 2018 issue of Montana\, Magazine of Western History.
