SUMMARY:Brother\, Can You Spare a Dime? Laughin’ to Keep from Cryin’
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Music and Storytelling at Veteran’s Memorial Park\, 100 Main Street\, Stevensville\, MT with Montana Humanities Scholar\, Bill Rossiter!\nThe Great Depression of the “Dirty Thirties” left Americans with a wicked gallows humor\, a sense that if they could keep laughing\, they wouldn’t have to start crying.  This program shows that spit-in-the-demon’s-eye spirit\, not through history and literature\, but through folklore and “illiterature.”   Americans survived a disaster by using a great national resource: their sense of humor. \nMontana newspapers from the ’20s tell of bank failures\, crop losses\, and deserted homesteads—issues not widely reported in the rest of the nation until a decade later. This “bareknuckle” musical report is accompanied by banjo\, guitar and autoharp.   Participants are encouraged to share recollections\, family lore\, stories and songs from the Depression. \nSponsored in part by Humanities Montana \nBring your lawn chair and please register so we have a head count.  \nBill Rossiter has been playing traditional finger-style guitar\, autoharp and old-time “clawhammer” banjo music in bars\, concert halls and back rooms for a reeeeelly long time. About his singing\, reviewers have raved\, “Yikes!” as well as
“Hmmmm!” and “What the. . . ?”\nBill has been a farm laborer\, brakeman\, Capuchin friar\, factory worker\, newspaper columnist\, carpenter\, public relations flack\, disk jockey\, ghostwriter and bartender. \nHe is a 2015 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Service to the Humanities in Montana. \nBill chaired the Humanities Division and taught literature and
illiterature (folklore) for twenty-five years at Flathead Valley
Community College and as an adjunct at the University of Montana\, retiring
in 1999. He currently rambles around Montana\, Idaho\,
Wyoming and Colorado singing songs of the railroad\, heroes
and outlaws\, the Irish immigration\, the Western frontier\, the Civil War\, cowboys and sodbusters\, mines and miners\, the Great Depression\, and other eras of American history. \nHe says he learned most of his songs at his mother’s knee and other low joints.

SUMMARY:Into the Wild with "Muir and Pinchot"
DESCRIPTION:This is a Walk & Talk at Bitterroot River Park\, 100 Stevensville Cutoff Rd\, Stevensville\, MT 59870.  Please Register at www.northvalleylibrary.org for headcount and location updates.  Presented by Humanities Montana scholars\, John Clayton and Marisa Diaz-Waian. \nHow do we relate to nature? Preservation-based philosophies – associated with author and wanderer John Muir – celebrate the spiritual benefits of holistic\, unimpaired natural systems.   Conservation-based philosophies – associated with US Forest Service founder Gifford Pinchot – highlight management and sustainability of natural resources for all.  In 1896\, Muir and Pinchot met in what is now Glacier National Park and discussed these philosophies.  What happened next changed the course of history. \nIn this program\, biographer John Clayton and philosopher Marisa Diaz-Waian co-lead a discussion about the unique lives of Muir and Pinchot and the questions their contrasting philosophies raise about “the wild” and our place in it.  Some of the questions we’ll explore include: \n\nAre people part of nature\, or separate (and inferior)?\nHow do we balance holistic spiritual benefits with specific resource-based ones?\nWhat’s more important\, individualism or fairness and sustainability?\nCan contrasting philosophies come together for a common good?\n\nConducted on a on a walk-about — going into the wild with Muir and Pinchot. \nSponsored in part by Humanities Montana.  \nJohn Clayton is a nonfiction writer who is particularly drawn to the intersection of history\, nature\, and culture. His book Wonderlandscape: Yellowstone National Park and the Evolution of an American Cultural Icon won the High Plains Book Award. His previous books include The Cowboy Girl: The Life of Caroline Lockhart and Stories from Montana’s Enduring Frontier. He often writes for the Montana Quarterly and Big Sky Journal\, among other magazines. This presentation draws from his latest book\, Natural Rivals: John Muir\, Gifford Pinchot\, and the Creation of America’s Public Lands. \nMarisa Diaz-Waian is the founder and director of Merlin CCC\, a public philosophy non-profit based out of Helena\, MT.  A member of the Mellon Philosophy as a Way of Life Network\, the 2020 Ethics Initiative Project “Connecting Generations through Ethics\,” and the Philosophy Learning & Teaching Organization\, she presents and contributes regularly on ways in which philosophy can help to enrich lives and strengthen our communities and environment.
