DESCRIPTION:Bitterroot Audubon’s January meeting will feature a presentation on the use of drones for natural resource management. Stevensville native Philip Williams recently completed an MS in Forestry at UM\, emphasizing geographic information systems (GIS)/remote sensing and ecological restoration. He will discuss the multiple uses\, misuses\, opportunities\, and challenges of using drones in a natural resources management context\, with an emphasis on applicability to nature conservation. While drones have hitherto been mainly used for military purposes\, they are increasingly becoming relevant to forestry\, wildlife\, and general conservation practices. However\, these opportunities come with pros and cons\, like any technology made applicable to natural resources management and conservation.\nThe Audubon meeting and Philip’s presentation are on Monday\, January 20 at 7 p.m. at the Bitterroot National Forest Headquarters on Hwy 93 on the north end of Hamilton. DESCRIPTION:Bruce Maxwell\, one of the lead authors of the 2017 Montana Climate Assessment (MCA)\, will speak Thursday\, January 23 at 7 p.m. in the Bitterroot National Forest Supervisor’s office public meeting room (1801 N. First Street\, Hamilton). The talk is sponsored by the Bitterroot Climate Action Group (BCAG)\, and will be free and open to the public. The Montana Climate Assessment is a report prepared by experts at the direction of Governor Steve Bullock. The purpose of the MCA report was to analyze the predicted effects of climate change on Montana\, with region-specific predictions of the likely consequences for water\, forests\, and agriculture. Dr. Maxwell is a Professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Science at Montana State University\, specializing in agroecology\, invasive plant ecology\, and weed biology. His contributions to the MCA focused on the effects of global warming on agriculture in Montana. Dr. Maxwell will describe the findings of the MCA and will update those findings with more recent information. Understanding the range of likely results of global warming should help Bitterroot Valley residents adjust their farming\, gardening\, forestry\, and business practices accordingly.

Participants will then ice fish from 9a.m.-12p.m. on Saturday\, Jan. 25 at Frenchtown Pond State Park.\nThis class is for beginning to intermediate female anglers who want to learn the basics or improve their ice fishing skills.
